Ternary nickel-rich layered oxide LiNiCoMnO (NCM811) is recognized as a cathode material with a promising future, attributed to its high energy density. However, the pulverization of cathode particles, structural collapse, and electrolyte decomposition are closely associated with the fragile cathode-electrolyte interphases (CEI), which seriously affect the electrochemical performances of ternary high-nickel materials. In this paper, fluorine- and nitrogen-containing methyl-2-nitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzoate (MNTB) was selected, which was synergistically regulated with fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) to generate a robust CEI film. The preferential decomposition of MNTB/FEC results in the formation of an inorganic-rich (LiN, LiF, and LiO) CEI film with uniformly dense and stable characteristics, which is conducive to the migration of Li and the stability of the NCM811 structure and enhances the cycling stability of the battery system. Simultaneously, MNTB effectively suppresses the adverse reaction associated with increased polarization caused by higher interface impedance due to conventional single FEC additives, further improving the rate capability of the battery. Moreover, MNTB/FEC can effectively eliminate HF, preventing its corrosion on the NCM811 cathode. Under the synergistic effect of MNTB/FEC, after 300 discharge cycles at a high cutoff voltage of 4.3 V and a current density of 1 C (2 mA cm), the discharge capacity of the NCM811||Li battery was 150.12 mA h g with a capacity retention of 81.10%, while it was only 32.8% for the standard electrolyte (STD). The discharged capacity of the MNTB/FEC-containing battery was about 115.43 mA h g at the high rate of 7 C, which was considerably higher than that of the STD (93.34 mA h g). In this study, the designed MNTB as a novel solvent synergistically regulated with FEC will contribute to the enhanced stability of NCM811 materials at high cutoff voltages and at the same time provide an effective modified strategy to enhance the stability of commercial electrodes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the less understood process of natural organohalogen formation in dark conditions (aphotic) compared to more well-known light-driven (photochemical) processes, particularly focusing on two types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from wetland plants.
  • It finds that the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora (SA-DOM) is more prone to photochemical halogenation due to its higher aromatic content, while Phragmites australis (PA-DOM) produces more natural organohalogens (NOHs) during dark reactions.
  • The research highlights the importance of dissolved oxygen levels and suggests that both photochemical and aphotic pathways contribute significantly to NOH formation, making them relevant under varying environmental conditions.

The problem of rapid degradation of the operating voltage and discharge specific capacity of lithium-rich layered oxide (LRMs) cathode materials is a major constraint for their commercial application. In this paper, CoS coating with a 3D layered structure assisted by PVP is used to enhance the cycle life and rate performance of the LRMs material. The introduction of PVP has the following effects: (1) it reduces the solubility of CoS in the electrolyte solution and forms a stable CoS coating, and (2) it acts as a nitrogen-containing carbon matrix material and the heteroatomic dopant, and can provide more active sites to improve the conductivity of CoS.

Pterins, including biopterin prevalent during cyanobacterial blooms, are nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds ubiquitous in both natural and engineered environments. However, their roles and associated human risks in water treatment remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the kinetics, disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and toxicity of biopterin in chlorination.

Nitrogen-containing compounds are valuable synthetic intermediates and targets in nearly every chemical industry. While methods for nitrogen-carbon and nitrogen-heteroatom bond formation have primarily relied on nucleophilic nitrogen atom reactivity, molecules containing nitrogen-halogen bonds allow for electrophilic or radical reactivity modes at the nitrogen center. Despite the growing synthetic utility of nitrogen-halogen bond-containing compounds, selective catalytic strategies for their synthesis are largely underexplored.
