Biochar is a carbonaceous solid that is prepared through thermo-chemical decomposition of biomass under an inert atmosphere. The present study compares the performance of biochar prepared from Peanut shell, coconut shell and walnut shell in dual chamber microbial fuel cell. The physicochemical and electrochemical analysis of biochar reveals that prepared biochar is macroporous, amorphous, biocompatible, and electrochemically conductive. Polarization studies show that Peanut shell biochar (PSB) exhibited a maximum power density of 165 mW/m followed by Coconut shell biochar (CSB) Activated Charcoal (AC) and Walnut shell biochar (WSB). Enhanced power density of PSB was attributed to its surface area and suitable pore size distribution which proved conducive for biofilm formation. Furthermore, the high electrical capacitance of PSB improved the electron transfer between microbes and anode.

Permanganate (Mn(VII)) is a traditional reagent used for water purification, but it is mild to deal with refractory organic contaminants of emerging concern. There is great interest in combination with effective and low-cost biochar to improve reaction kinetics of Mn(VII). Until recently, it still unclear how biomass composition and carbon structure of biochar influence the Mn(VII) oxidation performance.

Article Synopsis
  • Cadmium contamination in aquatic systems is a major environmental issue, and this study introduces a new hybrid material called Fe-TWBC, made from combining solid waste iron tailings and biochar through co-pyrolysis.
  • Characterization analyses indicated that the metal oxides from iron tailings were effectively integrated into the biochar, enhancing its surface functionality.
  • The Fe-TWBC demonstrated a significantly higher capacity for cadmium adsorption (95.06 mg·g) compared to both pristine biochar and iron tailings, and adsorption behavior was consistent with established kinetic and isotherm models, showcasing its potential for environmental cleanup and sustainable waste utilization.

Dimethoate is a toxic organophosphorus insecticide and its contamination of water poses a threat to the surrounding ecosystem. In order to enhance the removal effect of ferrate (Fe(VI)) on dimethoate, modified graphene-like biochar (SIZBC) with reduction and adsorption properties was prepared in this study. Compared with Fe(VI) alone, the removal of dimethoate by Fe(VI)/SIZBC increased from 26 % to more than 97 %, and the reaction rate was accelerated by 34 times.

To investigate the remediation effect of iron-manganese-modified biochar from different biomasses (FM-BC) on Cd-contaminated alkaline soil, FM-BC was prepared using branches of , durian shells, and corn stalks. The characteristics of FM-BC, the adsorption of Cd(Ⅱ) in water, and the available, fraction of Cd in alkaline soil were studied using bath adsorption and soil culture experiments. The results showed that the specific surface area, total pore volume, and oxygen content of FM-BC were significantly improved.

Compared to the laboratory preparation of biochar, there is less research on the adsorption of antibiotics by industrial production of biochar in water. In this study, three types of industrial production biochar (peanut shell biochar, sludge biochar, and perishable waste biochar) were selected, and their adsorption performance for tetracycline in composite-polluted water was systematically studied. The results indicated that the Freundlich equation could well fit the adsorption isotherms of the three types of biochar for tetracycline.
