Polarization-insensitive semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) in all-optical networks can improve the signal-light quality and transmission rate. Herein, to reduce the gain sensitivity to polarization, a multi-quantum-well SOA in the 1550 nm band is designed, simulated, and developed. The active region mainly comprises the quaternary compound InGaAlAs, as differences in the potential barriers and wells of the components cause lattice mismatch. Consequently, a strained quantum well is generated, providing the SOA with gain insensitivity to the polarization state of light. In simulations, the SOA with ridge widths of 4 µm, 5 µm, and 6 µm is investigated. A 3 dB gain bandwidth of >140 nm is achieved with a 4 µm ridge width, whereas a 6 µm ridge width provides more output power and gain. The saturated output power is 150 mW (21.76 dB gain) at an input power of 0 dBm but increases to 233 mW (13.67 dB gain) at an input power of 10 dBm. The polarization sensitivity is <3 dBm at -20 dBm. This design, which achieves low polarization sensitivity, a wide gain bandwidth, and high gain, will be applicable in a wide range of fields following further optimization.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a semiconductor with a wide range of applications, and often the properties are modified by metal-ion doping. The distribution of dopant atoms within the ZnO crystal strongly affects the optical and magnetic properties, making it crucial to comprehend the structure down to the atomic level. Our study reveals the dopant structure and its contents in Eu-doped ZnO nanosponges with up to 20% Eu-O clusters.

Triplet excited states in organic semiconductors are usually optically dark and long-lived as they have a spin-forbidden transition to the singlet ground state and therefore hinder processes in light-harvesting applications. Also, triplets often cause damage to the system as they can sensitize the formation of reactive singlet oxygen. Despite these unfavorable characteristics, there exist mechanisms through which we can utilize triplet states, and that constitutes the scope of this review.

Silicon photonics is a rapidly developing technology that promises to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute and sense the world. However, the lack of highly scalable, native complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-integrated light sources is one of the main factors hampering its widespread adoption. Despite considerable progress in hybrid and heterogeneous integration of III-V light sources on silicon, monolithic integration by direct epitaxy of III-V materials remains the pinnacle of cost-effective on-chip light sources.

In this work, the sensing ability and the underlying reaction pathways of HS adsorption on two nanomaterial systems, pristine zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) and gold functionalized zinc oxide nanowires (Au@ZnO NWs), were explored in a side-by-side comparison of optical and electrical gas sensing. The properties of optical sensing were analyzed by photoluminescence intensity-over-time measurements (-) of as-grown ZnO NW samples, and the electrical gas-sensing properties were analyzed by current-over-time measurements (-) of ZnO NW chemically sensitive field-effect transistor (ChemFET) structures with a gas-sensitive open gate. The ZnO NWs were grown by high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and thereafter surface-functionalized with a thin Au nanoparticle layer by magnetron sputtering.

Multilayered van der Waals (vdW) materials are semiconductors composed of atomically thin crystal layers, held together by weak vdW forces. They offer unique crystal structures and electronic properties, distinct from conventional semiconductors, making them a promising platform for linear and nonlinear optics. In this context, the large refractive indexes given by highly polarizable transition metals, combined with excitonic resonances and unconventional crystalline structures, provides a toolbox for exploring non-linear physics and strong light-matter interactions with unprecedented opportunities for nanoscale optics.
