Our results reveal different responses of soil multifunctionality to increased and decreased precipitation. By linking microbial network properties to soil functions, we also show that network complexity and potentially competitive interactions are key drivers of soil multifunctionality.

Soil bacterial communities are critical for maintaining ecosystem functions, yet the impact of water level fluctuations on ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and the role of bacterial communities in the lake water-level-fluctuating zone (WLFZ) remain poorly understood. This study investigated how seasonal water level fluctuations influence EMF and their relationships with soil bacterial communities through a two-year field survey. We found that soil bacterial diversity was significantly positively correlated with EMF.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are widely advocated to have multiple benefits, including in flood risk reduction, water quality improvement and ecosystem health. There are, however, few empirical studies quantifying such multi-functionality. Given the ongoing pressures of flooding and poor water quality within Europe, there is an urgent need for empirical evidence to assess the potential for NbS features to address these issues.

There is increasing evidence that ecosystems are affected by multiple global change factors, impeding the sustainability of multiple soil functions. Biodiversity can buffer ecosystem functions against environmental changes, a concept largely supported by insurance and portfolio theories. However, the role of soil biodiversity, especially the diversity of abundant and rare microbial taxa, in regulating soil multifunctionality resistance under an increasing number of global change factors remains poorly explored.

In mountainous regions, global warming has changed the biological diversity and community structure of both aboveground and belowground organisms, and it may cause biota to move from lower altitudes to higher altitudes. However, our understanding of such migrations of soil mesofauna caused by global warming on soil processes and functions remains limited. We carried out a 79-day experiment comprising treatments without mesofauna (WM), native mesofauna (NM), migratory mesofauna (MM), and both native and migratory mesofauna together (TM) to reveal the effects of soil mesofauna migration on greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem multifunctionality, and the underlying mechanisms.

Grazing exclusion is effective in restoring vegetation and ecological services in degraded grasslands within semi-arid regions. Variations in plant functional traits associated with the duration of grazing exclusion can indicate both ecological adaptability of plants and restoration processes of ecosystems. However, research on ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) under grazing exclusion and restoration mechanisms mediated by plant functional traits is relatively limited.
