Unresectable cardiac metastasis from melanoma responds well to combination immunotherapy-a case report.

Published: June 2024

Background: Melanoma can metastasize to distal organs including the heart although presentation with a symptomatic cardiac metastasis is rare. The optimal management remains uncertain particularly in the era of immunotherapy.

Case Summary: We report a case presenting with a large unresectable cardiac metastasis from melanoma that responded well to treatment with immunotherapy.

Conclusion: Melanoma can metastasize to the heart and is often challenging to diagnose. Combination immunotherapy can be an effective treatment option even in the setting of a symptomatic and unresectable cardiac metastasis.

High blood levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) have been shown in various malignancies. In lung cancer, the importance of NT-proBNP is not clear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the significance of the correlation of NT-proBNP levels in lung cancer with tumor stage, tumor diameter, histopathology, and specific sites of mediastinal metastasis: lymphadenopathy; pericardial, cardiac, major vessel, other mediastinal organ or lymphatic involvement/invasion.

Malignant tumors are among the major diseases threatening human survival in the world, and advancements in medical technology have led to a steady increase in their detection rates worldwide. Despite unique clinical presentations across the spectrum of malignancies, treatment modalities generally adhere to common strategies, encompassing primarily surgical intervention, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted treatments. Uncovering the genetic elements contributing to cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and drug resistance remains a pivotal pursuit in the development of novel targeted therapeutics.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases and cancer are leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Patients with malignancies are at increased risk for cardiovascular complications including acute coronary syndromes, chemotherapy or radiation therapy related complications and cardiac metastasis.

Case Summary: We present a case of a 47-year-old female with metastatic cancer on immunotherapy presented with anterior ST elevation myocardial infarction followed by emergent percutaneous coronary intervention in the left anterior descending artery.

Steatohepatitis-induced vascular niche alterations promote melanoma metastasis.

Background: In malignant melanoma, liver metastases significantly reduce survival, even despite highly effective new therapies. Given the increase in metabolic liver diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), this study investigated the impact of liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC)-specific alterations in MASLD/MASH on hepatic melanoma metastasis.

Methods: Mice were fed a choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for ten weeks to induce MASH-associated liver fibrosis, or a CDAA diet or a high fat diet (HFD) for shorter periods of time to induce early steatosis-associated alterations.

Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) significantly impact surgical outcomes, and Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, a simple and easily available nutritional score, has been demonstrated to be significantly associated with postoperative patient outcomes and complications, including PPCs. However, there are few studies that specifically focus on patients undergoing radical surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 2,553 patients who underwent radical surgery for CRC at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.
