Article Abstract

A study on infertility in China found that while 543 health care institutions are approved for assisted reproductive technology (ART), only 10.1% offer all ART services, with a significant skew toward the eastern regions, highlighting the accessibility challenges faced by rural and remote populations; this study recommends government measures including travel subsidies and education initiatives to improve ART access for economically disadvantaged individuals.

A triad of enzymatic antioxidants viz., catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) constitutes a first line of defence against any redox imbalances in the semen. Cryopreservation enabling long term storage of semen also prompts generation of surplus reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cells with waned antioxidants, hampering the full exploitation of this process.

Bridging the gap: An outlook of oncofertility care in Africa.

Int J Gynaecol Obstet

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Aga-Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya.

This article examines existing literature on oncofertility in Africa and explores the barriers to oncofertility care. Patient-level barriers include lack of awareness about fertility preservation options, financial constraints, and the heavy emotional burden of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Healthcare-provider barriers encompass lack of awareness, prioritization of prompt cancer treatment, and implicit biases.

Purpose: To investigate BMAL1 and BMP6 expressive differences in ovarian granulosa cells (OGCs) of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), explore regulatory relationship, assess their impacts on OGC proliferation and apoptosis, and analyze their correlations with ART outcomes of patients.

Methods: A clinical study selected 40 PCOS patients who underwent IVF/ICSI in our hospital from January to October 2022 and 39 controls with male or tubal factor infertility. RT-qPCR and Western blot assessed BMAL1 and BMP6 mRNA/protein levels.

CFAP65 is essential for C2a projection integrity in axonemes: implications for organ-specific ciliary dysfunction and infertility.

Cell Mol Life Sci

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, Department of Histology and Embryology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, 211166, China.

Defects in motile cilia and flagella lead to motile ciliopathies, including primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), which manifests as multi-organ dysfunction such as hydrocephalus, infertility, and respiratory issues. CFAP65 variants are a common cause of male infertility, but its localization and function have remained unclear. In this study, we systematically evaluated CFAP65's role using Cfap65 knockout mice and human patients with CFAP65 variants.

Reproductive technologies, including sperm cryopreservation, offer conservationists enhanced capacity to genetically manage populations and improve the outcomes of conservation breeding programs (CBPs). Despite this potential, the post-thaw quality of amphibian sperm is highly variable following cryopreservation, and research focused on protocol refinement is needed. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to investigate the effect of the addition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to the cryopreservation medium (pre-freeze), and (2) the effect of the addition of caffeine to the activation medium (post-thaw), on post-thaw sperm characteristics in the critically endangered Booroolong frog ().
