Carbon-water interaction studies between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are especially needed today in Arctic and Boreal regions, as they are facing drastic warming and precipitation shifts. Despite the importance of streams in the carbon cycle, northern stream-based studies are scarce, owing to a lack of measurements throughout the north, and possibly skewing global greenhouse gas estimates. We used a combination of multiscale measurements to quantify water sources (HO isotope proxies), carbon availability (dissolved in/organic carbon concentrations) and quality (water absorbance, SUVA -index), microbial community structure (16S rRNA sequencing), and carbon dioxide (CO) and methane (CH) fluxes and concentrations.

Phenytoin is a well-known anticonvulsant medication that is useful in the management of most seizure disorders. Given the narrow therapeutic index of 10-20 mg/mL, acute phenytoin overdose can occur with either oral or intravenous administration. There is no distinct antidote to phenytoin, and therefore supportive care is the treatment of choice.

Objective: The synergistic inhibitory effect of celecoxib (CXB) and dimethyl-celecoxib (DMC) plus paclitaxel (PA) or cisplatin (CP) on human cervix HeLa and SiHa cells was assessed at multiple cellular levels in order to elucidate the biochemical mechanisms triggered by the synergistic drug combinations.
Methods: The effect of CXB (5 μM)/CP (2 μM) or CXB (5 μM)/PA (15 μM) and DMC (15 μM)/CP (5 μM) or DMC (15 μM)/PA (20 μM) for 24 h was assayed on cancer cell proliferation, energy metabolism, mitophagy, ROS production, glycoprotein-P activity, DNA stability and apoptosis/necrosis.
Results: Drug combinations synergistically decreased HeLa and SiHa cell proliferation (>75%) and arrested cellular cycle by decreasing S and G2/M phases as well as the Ki67 content (HeLa) by 7.

Nucleocytoplasmic Large DNA Viruses (NCLDVs, also called giant viruses) are widespread in marine systems and infect a broad range of microbial eukaryotes (protists). Recent biogeographic work has provided global snapshots of NCLDV diversity and community composition across the world's oceans, yet little information exists about the guiding 'rules' underpinning their community dynamics over time. We leveraged a five-year monthly metagenomic time-series to quantify the community composition of NCLDVs off the coast of Southern California and characterize these populations' temporal dynamics.
