Pyrite (FeS) often accommodates elevated concentrations of platinum-group elements in ores of magmatic and hydrothermal origin. In order to elucidate the role of pyrite in concentrating Pd, Pd-doped synthetic crystals were studied via X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Crystals were obtained by salt-flux method in the system saturated with respect to Pd at the temperature of 580 °C and sulphur fugacity of log f (S) = -0.

Plenty of the toxic gold cyanide residues are produced by cyanidation process of gold extraction. As a kind of hazardous solid wastes, cyanide residues must be treated to remove cyanide before disposal. In this study, the removal of cyanide in gold cyanide residues by manganese compounds (KMnO and MnO) was investigated.

Coal ball preparation techniques have evolved over the past century, with the cellulose acetate peel method becoming the standard in the 1950s. While coal ball research is not as active as it has been in the past, large collections of coal balls and their respective peels still form a large part of many museum and university collections.
