The ability to confine light has great significance in both fundamental science and practical applications. Optical black hole (OBH) cavities show intriguing zero radiation loss and strong field confinement. In this work, we systematically explore the whispering gallery mode (WGM) in a group of generalized OBH cavities, featuring bound states and strong field confinement. The field confinement in generalized OBH cavities is revealed to be enhanced with the increase of index-modulation factors, resulting from the increase of a potential barrier. Furthermore, we reveal the anomalous external resonant modes, exhibiting fascinating field enhancement in the low-index region far beyond the cavity boundary. These anomalous WGMs are attributed to the potential bending effect and above-barrier resonance. Our work may shed light on tailoring WGM fields in gradient-index cavities and find potential applications in light coupling and optical sensing.

Laser frequency combs are enabling some of the most exciting scientific endeavours in the twenty-first century, ranging from the development of optical clocks to the calibration of the astronomical spectrographs used for discovering Earth-like exoplanets. Dissipative Kerr solitons generated in microresonators currently offer the prospect of attaining frequency combs in miniaturized systems by capitalizing on advances in photonic integration. Most of the applications based on soliton microcombs rely on tuning a continuous-wave laser into a longitudinal mode of a microresonator engineered to display anomalous dispersion.

We report on a new method of achieving and optimizing a high Q factor in a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) by introducing two nodal wedges to a tuning-fork/fiber probe distance sensor and by selecting a vibrational mode of the dithering sensor. The effect of the nodal wedges on the dynamical properties of the sensor is theoretically analyzed and experimentally confirmed. The optimization achieved by the proposed method is understood from the vibration isolation and the subsequent formation of a local vibration cavity.
