Objective: Meteorin-like (Metrnl), a secreted myokine, is a newly discovered neurotrophic factor. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between the Metrnl level and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).

Methods: The investigation was conducted on a sample of 80 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 60 healthy controls. The T2DM patients were categorized into two subgroups based on skin biopsy: the DPN subgroup (n = 20) and the diabetes without neuropathy subgroup (n = 60).

Results: The T2DM groups had higher serum Metrnl concentrations compared with the controls. The serum Metrnl concentration was significantly lower in the DPN group than in T2DM patients without neuropathy. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated a notable correlation between serum Metrnl and DPN (OR: 0.997, 95% CI: 0.995-1.000, P < 0.05). Serum Metrnl level was negatively correlated with age and SBP after a simple logistic regression analysis.

Conclusion: Serum Metrnl concentration is independently correlated with DPN.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipid metabolism disturbances are linked to intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), particularly in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells, where there's an imbalance in fat synthesis and usage.
  • Exercise may protect against IDD, and myokines like meteorin-like protein (Metrnl) released during exercise could play a role in regulating lipid metabolism in NP cells.
  • The study showed that exercise improves IDD by reducing lipid buildup in NP cells, enhancing extracellular matrix health, and further suggests that Metrnl boosts lipid utilization through a mechanism involving carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) activation.

Introduction: Interleukin (IL)-41, a type of cytokine also known as Metrnl, is involved in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory and immune-related diseases. However, its role in Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a field yet to be explored, remains a mystery. This study therefore assesses the diagnostic utility of IL-41 in patients with AS and examines the correlations among IL-41 levels, disease activity, and patients' demographic and clinical data.

Article Synopsis
  • Interleukin-41 (IL-41), a multifunctional protein with neurotrophic and anti-inflammatory properties, may help combat conditions like sepsis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by reducing acute lung injury (ALI) triggered by lipopolysaccharides (LPS).
  • In a study involving mice and bronchial epithelial cells, researchers found that IL-41 administration led to less lung inflammation, reduced cell death, and overall improved lung conditions when exposed to LPS.
  • The study concluded that IL-41 activates the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway to protect against ALI, suggesting it could be a potential therapeutic target for personalized treatment based on individual IL-41 levels.

Purpose: Meteorin-like (Metrnl) is a novel adipokine which is highly expressed in adipose tissue and has a beneficial effect on glucose and lipid metabolism. High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is well recognized to be inversely associated with cardiovascular events. However, the relationship between serum Metrnl levels and HDL-C in the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare serum Metrnl levels in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to those without it, involving a total of 180 participants.
  • Results showed that women with GDM had significantly lower median serum Metrnl levels (1.16 ng/mL) compared to healthy controls (2.2 ng/mL).
  • The study concluded that decreased serum Metrnl levels in GDM patients could indicate a potential biomarker for the condition, although the reasons for this decrease are still unknown and require further research.
