This essay is dedicated to the memory of my father David Sompolinsky. As a medical student in Veterinary Medicine in Copenhagen, with the support of his professors and the Danish Resistance, David organised the rescue of 700 Danish Jews in October 1943, helping them escape Nazi persecution and find safety in Sweden.

Urinary exosome metabolite analysis has demonstrated notable advantages in uncovering disease status, yet its potential in decoding the intricacies of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains untapped. To address this, a core-shell magnetic titanium organic framework was designed to capture urinary exosomes and assist laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) to decipher the exosomal metabolic profile of ccRCC, with high sensitivity, throughput, and speed. A total of 492 urinary exosome metabolite fingerprints (UEMFs) from 176 samples were extracted for exploring the differences between ccRCC and healthy individuals.

In mammals, fertilization is followed by extensive reprogramming and reorganization of the chromatin accompanying the transcriptional activation of the embryo. This reprogramming results in blastomeres with the ability to give rise to all cell types and a complete organism, including extra-embryonic tissues, and is known as totipotency. Transcriptional activation occurs in a process known as zygotic genome activation (ZGA) and is tightly linked to the expression of transposable elements, including endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) such as endogenous retrovirus with leucine tRNA primer (ERVL).
