Biological nitrogen fixation is a fundamental biogeochemical process that transforms molecular nitrogen into biologically available nitrogen via diazotrophic microbes. Diazotrophs anaerobically fix nitrogen using the nitrogenase enzyme which is arranged in three different gene clusters: (i) molybdenum nitrogenase () is the most abundant, followed by it's alternatives, (ii) vanadium nitrogenase () and (iii) iron nitrogenase (). Multiple databases have been constructed as resources for diazotrophic 'omics analysis; however, an integrated database based on whole genome references does not exist. Here, we present NFDB (Nitrogen Fixation DataBase), a comprehensive integrated whole genome based database for diazotrophs, which includes all nitrogenases (, , ) and nitrogenase-like enzymes (e.g. ) linked to ribosomal RNA operons (16S-5S-23S). NFDB was computed using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) against the entire whole genome based Genome Taxonomy Database (GTDB R214), providing searchable reference HMMs for all nitrogenase and nitrogenase-like genes, complete ribosomal RNA operons, both GTDB and NCBI/RefSeq taxonomy, and an SQL database for querying matches. We compared NFDB to databases from Buckley, Zehr, Mise and FunGene finding extensive evidence of , in addition to and . NFDB contains >4000 verified sequences contained on 50 unique phyla of bacteria and archaea. NFDB provides the first comprehensive nitrogenase database available to researchers unlocking diazotrophic microbial potential.

Red soil occupies an important position in China's agriculturally cultivated land resources. However, its low pH value, high aluminum concentration, and inefficient phosphorus utilization limit the productivity of acidic red soil farmland. Plant roots exhibit remarkable plasticity, capable of absorbing water and nutrients and modulating root system architecture in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, either autonomously or through rhizosphere microorganisms.

In this research, a sustainable blue-green infrastructure (BGI) was developed to efficiently remove contaminants from stormwater through a combined use of modified porous asphalt (PA) and microalgae cultivation to provide a potential drinking water (DW) source. According to the results, the modified PA with powder activated carbon (PAC) could successfully reduce the level of total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oil and grease to below the DW standards but failed to efficiently remove some heavy metals (HMs) and nutrient pollutants. The results revealed that the treated stormwater was an appropriate medium for microalgae cultivation.

Maize ( L.), a key staple crop in Sub-Saharan Africa, is particularly vulnerable to concurrent drought and heat stress, which threatens crop yield and food security. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have shown potential as biofertilizers to enhance plant resilience under such abiotic stresses.

Rubisco, the most prevalent protein on Earth, catalysers both a reaction that initiates C carbon fixation, and a reaction that initiates photorespiration, which stimulates protein synthesis. Regulation of the balance between these reactions under atmospheric CO fluctuations remains poorly understood. We have hypothesised that vascular plants maintain organic carbon-to-nitrogen homoeostasis by adjusting the relative activities of magnesium and manganese in chloroplasts to balance carbon fixation and nitrate assimilation rates.
