Objective: The leptin receptor, encoded by the gene, is involved in tumorigenesis. A potential functional variant of , rs1137101 (Gln223Arg), has been extensively investigated for its contribution to the risk of digestive system (DS) cancers, but results remain conflicting rather than conclusive. Here, we performed a case-control study and subsequent meta-analysis to examine the association between rs1137101 and DS cancer risk.

Methods: A total of 1,727 patients with cancer (gastric/liver/colorectal: 460/480/787) and 800 healthy controls were recruited. Genotyping of rs1137101 was conducted using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay and confirmed using Sanger sequencing. Twenty-four eligible studies were included in the meta-analysis.

Results: After Bonferroni correction, the case-control study revealed that rs1137101 was significantly associated with the risk of liver cancer in the Hubei Chinese population. The meta-analysis suggested that rs1137101 is significantly associated with the risk of overall DS, gastric, and liver cancer in the Chinese population.

Conclusion: The rs1137101 variant may be a genetic biomarker for susceptibility to DS cancers (especially liver and gastric cancer) in the Chinese population.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been the largest pandemic of the past century, and various genetic factors have played a significant role in this context. This study aimed to analyze the frequency and association between specific SNPs rs3806268 (NLRP3), rs4925543 (NLRP3), rs12150220 (NLRP1), rs455060 (NLRC4), rs699 (AGT), rs1137101 (LEPR), and rs1801133 (MTHFR) and severe/critical outcomes in Brazilian patients with COVID-19. A total of 100 patients were included in the study, comprising 66 cases and 34 controls.

Division of General Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, 34093 Istanbul, Türkiye.

We investigated whether the results of leptin gene (LEP) 2548G/A (rs7799039) and leptin receptor gene (LEPR) 668 A/G (rs1137101) variants, as well as the methylation analysis of CpG regions at nucleotides -31 and -51 of the LEP gene, showed any differences between breastfed and non-breastfed children in this study. The cross-sectional study included 100 children aged 2-5 years who were attending nursery and kindergarten and had been accepted to the Department of General Paediatrics. Infants who were exclusively breastfed for the first six months after birth constituted the study group, and those who were not only breastfeed constituted the control group.

Article Synopsis
  • Antiseizure medications, like valproic acid (VPA), show different results in patients due to genetic factors, though there's limited research specifically on VPA compared to other drugs.
  • This study aimed to analyze how genetic variations influence the effectiveness, side effects, and serum levels of VPA in patients with genetic generalized epilepsies (GGE).
  • The results revealed that certain genetic variants are linked to treatment failure, increased serum levels, weight gain, and hair loss among GGE patients using VPA, suggesting a need for personalized medication approaches.

Gene-environment interaction studies are emerging as a promising tool to shed light on the reasons for the rapid increase in excess body weight (overweight and obesity). We aimed to investigate the influence of several polymorphisms on excess weight in Spanish children according to a short- and long-term exposure to bisphenols and parabens, combining individual approach with the joint effect of them. This case-control study included 144 controls and 98 cases children aged 3-12 years.

Objectives: Genetic predisposition plays a role in the etiology of metabolic syndrome (MetS), an important health problem worldwide. Leptin (LEP), produced by adipose tissue, plays a crucial role in the development of MetS. In this study, we evaluated the effects of LEP and LEP receptor (LEPR) variants on clinical findings and risk of developing MetS in the Turkish population.
