Tibial defects present a formidable reconstructive challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings such as Sub-Saharan Africa. The application of free osteocutaneous fibular flaps has emerged as a versatile and reliable technique for addressing these complex cases. However, the specific considerations and outcomes associated with this approach in Sub-Saharan Africa remain underexplored. This case report presents a detailed account of a patient with a long tibial defect managed using a free osteocutaneous fibular flap in Jimma University Medical Center, Ethiopia. The surgical intervention resulted in successful reconstruction of the tibial defect, with satisfactory functional outcomes observed during the follow-up period. The use of a free fibular flap for addressing bone defects is proposed as an economically viable single-stage procedure, requiring less patient compliance. Studies on this technique in Sub-Saharan Africa are limited, but outcomes have shown comparability to those in more developed countries.

Importance: Women who use heroin in sub-Saharan Africa face elevated HIV risk linked to structural vulnerability including frequent incarceration. However, little is known about the association between incarceration and drug use and HIV outcomes among women who use heroin in Africa.
Objective: To estimate associations between incarceration and adverse HIV-related and drug use-related outcomes among women who used heroin.

Introduction: Globally, the prevalence of undernutrition is highest in the sub-Saharan African region with over a third of the world's stunted children residing in this region. Many studies have explored child nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, but they often overlook the intricate nuances of maternal knowledge. We examined the association between maternal nutritional knowledge and childhood nutritional outcomes.

Pre-eclampsia remains a significant health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing substantially to maternal and neonatal mortality rates. This paper explores the potential of low-dose calcium supplementation as an alternative strategy to the conventional high-dose regimen in preventing pre-eclampsia. A consistent association between low serum calcium levels and an increased risk of pre-eclampsia is established based on studies spanning Ghana, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.

Access to diagnostic imaging is significantly limited in much of the world, and sub-Saharan Africa is no exception. Clinician-performed point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) may provide increased access to diagnostic imaging for many patients in low-resource settings, but training in this modality is limited. We describe the development and implementation of a context-specific, multi-modal pilot POCUS curriculum involving hands-on instruction, in-person and online didactics, asynchronous online image review, and quantitative evaluation.

Malaria is a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Timely and accurate diagnosis of malaria is vital to reduce the caseload and mortality rates associated with malaria The use of microscopy in malaria screening is the gold standard recommended method by the World Health Organisation (WHO). In Uganda, utilization of microscopy is challenged by insufficient expertise to interpret the images accurately, affecting the efficiency, effectiveness and accuracy of malaria detection and diagnosis.
