This pilot study investigates distinctive features within the nail-enthesis complex among Psoriatic arthritis (PsA), Psoriasis (PSO), Rheumatoid Arthrit is (RA), and Healthy Control (HC) groups, utilizing a combined approach of ultrasound (US) and nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC). Clinical assessments and comprehensive US and NVC evaluations of the nail-enthesis complex were conducted on 72 subjects (18 PsA, 16 PSO, 19 RA, 19 HC). Unsupervised clustering models and factor analysis were employed to identify patterns and interrelationships between US and NVC parameters.

The effect of nitrile gloves on temperature perception during hot water immersion.

Burns

January 2025

St. Andrew's Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Chelmsford CM1 7E, UK; St. Andrew's Anglia Ruskin Research (StAAR) Group, Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford, UK.

Introduction: Scalds account for 40 % of burn injuries in developed countries, with a subset occurring during caregiving activities, particularly when gloves are worn. Gloves, a standard precaution against infection and body fluid exposure, may impair sensory feedback critical for detecting temperature changes, potentially increasing the risk of burns during personal care tasks.

Methods: This study investigated the impact of glove use on heat perception.

Introduction: Alterations in multiple subregions of the human prefrontal cortex (PFC) have been heavily implicated in psychiatric diseases. Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that circadian rhythms in gene expression are present across the brain, including in the PFC, and that these rhythms are altered in disease. However, investigation into the potential circadian mechanisms underlying these diseases in animal models must contend with the fact that the human PFC is highly evolved and specialized relative to that of rodents.

Apolipoprotein A-IV and its derived peptide, T55-121, improve glycemic control and increase energy expenditure.

It is crucial to understand the glucose control within our bodies. Bariatric/metabolic surgeries, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), provide an avenue for exploring the potential key factors involved in maintaining glucose homeostasis since these surgeries have shown promising results in improving glycemic control among patients with severe type 2 diabetes (T2D). For the first time, a markedly altered population of serum proteins in patients after LSG was discovered and analyzed through proteomics.

Myokines: metabolic regulation in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Life Metab

June 2024

Department of Pathology and Pathophysiology and Department of Cardiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310058, China.

Skeletal muscle plays a vital role in the regulation of systemic metabolism, partly through its secretion of endocrine factors which are collectively known as myokines. Altered myokine levels are associated with metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D). The significance of interorgan crosstalk, particularly through myokines, has emerged as a fundamental aspect of nutrient and energy homeostasis.
