Source and raw water quality may deteriorate due to rainfall and river flow events that occur in watersheds. The effects on raw water quality are normally detected in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) with a time-lag after these events in the watersheds. Early warning systems (EWSs) in DWTPs require models with high accuracy in order to anticipate changes in raw water quality parameters. Ensemble machine learning (EML) techniques have recently been used for water quality modeling to improve accuracy and decrease variance in the outcomes. We used three decision-tree-based EML models (random forest [RF], gradient boosting [GB], and eXtreme Gradient Boosting [XGB]) to predict two critical parameters for DWTPs, raw water Turbidity and UV absorbance (UV254), using rainfall and river flow time series as predictors. When modeling raw water turbidity, the three EML models (r=0.87, r=0.80 and r=0.81) showed very good performance metrics. For raw water UV254, the three models (r=0.89, r=0.85 and r=0.88) again showed very good performance metrics. Results from this study suggest that EML approaches could be used in EWSs to anticipate changes in the quality parameters of raw water and enhance decision-making in DWTPs.

Heavy metals are life-threatening pollutions because of their great toxicity, long-term persistence in nature and their bioaccumulation in living organisms. In this work, we performed multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares analysis of UV-Vis raw spectra received by a colorimetric sensor constructed on mercaptoundecanoic acid functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@11MUA) to detect Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn in water. This combined approach allowed the rapid identification and quantification of multiple heavy metals and showed adequate sensitivity and selectivity, thus representing a promising analytical and computational method for both laboratory and field applications such as environmental safety and public health monitoring.

This study delves into the distinctive selective property exhibited by a non-conjugated cholesterol-based polymer, poly(CEM--EHA), in sorting semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) within isooctane. Comprised of 11 repeating units of cholesteryloxycarbonyl-2-hydroxy methacrylate (CEM) and 7 repeating units of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA), this non-conjugated polymer demonstrates robust supramolecular interactions across the sp surface structure of carbon nanotubes and graphene. When coupled with the Double Liquid-Phase Extraction (DLPE) technology, the polymer effectively segregates s-SWCNTs into the isooctane phase (nonpolar) while excluding metallic SWCNTs (m-SWCNTs) in the water phase (polar).

Molybdate, an oxidized form of molybdenum, facilitates molybdenum to be taken into cell, and thus to be included as a cofactor in the structure of enzymes necessary to ensure homeostasis. Although this compound provides the catalysis and electron transport of many biochemical reactions, it causes serious health problems in animals at high concentrations. For this reason, its recovery of water resources is one of the main subjects of scientific studies called bioremediaiton.

We have employed a triazine-based conjugated polymer network (CPN) for the selective detection of hypochlorite in a semi-aqueous environment. CPNs have been widely employed in gas capture, separation, and adsorption, but the fluorescent properties of CPNs possessing extensive π-conjugated systems tend to be unexplored. Herein, we report the photophysical properties of the CPN and investigate its sensing capability towards hypochlorite.

Goats are the one of the most susceptible domestic species to toxoplasmosis affecting animal health and production. The present study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in dairy goats from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as well as to evaluate associated risk factors, parasitic DNA detection in raw goat milk samples, and attempts to isolate the parasite from raw goat milk samples.
