An immunoelectron microscopic study was carried out on human placenta and decidua with the use of preembedding, the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique, and rabbit anti-murine laminin antibody. Laminin was detected in the lamina lucida of basement membrane of placental villi, amniotic membranes, umbilical cord, endometrial glands, and blood vessels. No positive laminin immunostaining was observed in intracytoplasmic organelles. However, positive immunostaining surrounded decidual cells as a more or less continuous linear membrane. It is suggested that laminin, as a component of this basement membrane-like material that has already been reported in decidual cells, may be related to the hormonal stimulation occurring during pregnancy and trophoblastic attachment.

Linear IgA bullous dermatosis (LABD) is a rare subepidermal blistering disorder characterized by the presence of linear IgA deposits at the basement membrane zone (BMZ) by direct immunofluorescence (DIF). This entity was first described by Chorzelski and Jablonska from Warsaw Center of Bullous Diseases, Poland. The disease affects children and adults, whereby they differ in terms of clinical picture and course.

The process of keratinization and cornification in the developing beak has been studied through immunofluorescence and immunogold electron microscopy in chick and zebrafinch embryos. After the curved beak anlagen appears at the tip of the maxillar bone, 5-8 layers of embryonic epidermis are generated from the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells are weakly immunoabeled for IFKs (Intermediate Filament Keratins) and more intensely for scaffoldin, a protein of the EDC (Epidermal Differentiation Complex) involved in the soft keratinization of the embryonic epidermis.

Membrane trafficking and actin-remodeling are critical for well-maintained integrity of the cell organization and activity, and they require Arf6 (ADP ribosylation factor 6) activated by GEF (guanine nucleotide exchange factor) including EFA6 (exchange factor for Arf6). In the present immuno-electron microscopic study following previous immunohistochemical study by these authors (Chomphoo et al., 2020) of in situ skeletal myoblasts and myotubes of pre-and perinatal mice, the immunoreactivity for EFA6A was found to be localized at Z-bands and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) membranes in I-domains as well as I-domain myofilaments of skeletal myofibers of perinatal mice.

Immunocytochemistry, a method of delineating the subcellular localization of target proteins, was developed from immunohistochemistry. In principle, proteins are labeled using an antigen-antibody reaction. In order to observe under an electron microscope, the reaction product must scatter the electron beam with sufficient contrast while it is necessary to have an amplifying label that can withstand the observation.

Oligodendrocytes and astrocytes are metabolically coupled to neuronal compartments. Pyruvate and lactate can shuttle between glial cells and axons via monocarboxylate transporters. However, lactate can only be synthesized or used in metabolic reactions with the help of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), a tetramer of LDHA and LDHB subunits in varying compositions.
