-Benzoquinones are important organic intermediates in the synthesis of biopharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. In this study, two crystalline 3D polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic frameworks, H[Cu(tpi)]{CuVO}·HO (, tpi = CNH) and [Co(Htpi)]{VO} (, Htpi = CNH), were synthesized, which as heterogeneous catalysts showed excellent catalytic activities for the synthesis of -benzoquinones. Both compounds were characterized by IR, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, TG, XPS, X-ray diffraction, etc. In , {CuV} clusters are connected together by copper cations and 1D Cu-organic coordination chains to yield a 3D polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF); in , adjacent 2D bimetallic oxide layers, constructed from 1D polyoxovanadate chains and cobalt ions, are further connected by 1D Co-organic coordination chains to form a 3D POMOF. Noteworthily, in the synthesis of trimethyl--benzoquinone, the key intermediate of vitamin E, using 2,3,6-trimethylphenol as the model substrate, the turnover frequency values for compounds and can, respectively, reach 607 and 380 h in 8 min. Furthermore, both compounds demonstrated excellent recyclability and structural stability, characterized by PXRD and IR. The catalytic mechanism reveals that both the homolytic radical mechanism and heterolytic oxygen atom transfer mechanism are involved.

Promoting the advancement of the structure and function of metastable substances is challenging but worthwhile. In particular, how to harness the entangled state and evolution path of labile porous structures has been at the forefront of research in molecular self-assembly. In this work, the metastable structures of polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic polyhedra (VMOPs) can be manually regulated, including separation of the interlocked aggregate by a ligand-widening approach as well as transformation from a tetrahedral to capsule-like scaffold via a vertice-remodeling strategy.

N-heteroarenes are a family of organics with significant chemical and pharmaceutical applications. They are generally prepared by the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of partially saturated N-heterocycles. In this work, we prepare and demonstrate the catalytic ODH applications of two polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic frameworks of the general formula {[M(bibp)][VO]}·HO (M = Ni , Co ; bibp = 4,4'-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)biphenyl).

Polyoxovanadates (POVs) have received widespread attention in catalytic applications due to their various structures and remarkable redox properties. By introducing a second transition metal, POV-based inorganic-organic hybrid (POVH) catalysts show increasing stability and more catalytic active sites compared with pure POVs. In this perspective article, POVH materials as oxidative catalysts have been classified into two main categories according to the interactions between transition metal-complex units and POV clusters: (i) hybrids with metal-organic units act as isolated cations and (ii) hybrids with an organic ligand coordinate to the second transition metal, which is further linked to a POV cluster oxygen bridges directly or indirectly to give zero-, one-, two- or three-dimensional supramolecular structures.

Selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes is an industrially significant chemical transformation. Herein, we report a mixed-valence polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic framework (MOF), (Hbix){[Cd(bix)][VIV8VV7OCl]}·3HO (V-Cd-MOF), for catalyzing the additive-free oxidation of a series of aromatic alcohols with high selectivity and in nearly quantitative yield to the corresponding aldehydes with O as the oxidant. Experimental results, corroborated with density functional theory calculations, indicate that it is the synergistic operation of the dual active sites of the V-O-V building units in the polyoxovanadate cluster that is responsible for the excellent catalytic performance observed: on the one hand, the exposed and readily accessible reduced V site is believed to activate O, resulting in a reactive oxygen species for the subsequent activation and breaking of the substrate's C-H bond.
