AI Article Synopsis

  • Excessive hair loss is a common issue for various patient groups, particularly those with hypothyroidism, which has led to interest in treatments like betulin for hair growth.
  • This pilot study examined the effects of betulin on hair loss in hypothyroid patients compared to a control group without the condition.
  • The findings were inconclusive, showing no clear evidence that betulin effectively prevents hair loss or promotes regrowth.

Article Abstract

Background: One common problem in various patient groups is excessive hair loss on the head. One such group is people struggling with hypothyroidism. The market for preparations for hair growth and hair loss prevention includes betulin.

Purpose: This pilot study investigated its effect on hair loss in hypothyroid patients.

Study Design: The study included a group of hypothyroid patients and a control group of people without hypothyroidism. Participants were randomly divided into a group taking placebo and betulin.

Methods: Results were investigated using photographic assessment of hair, trichoscopy and subjective evaluation of participants.

Conclusion: The study did not conclusively prove that betulin would contribute to the inhibition of hair loss or regrowth.

Purpose: To describe a technique using retroauricular scalp graft for eyebrow reconstruction, along with problems encountered and countermeasures in treatment.

Methods: We present a patient with eyebrow loss following resection of a malignant schwannoma. We initially covered the defect from the upper eyelid to the eyebrow area with artificial dermis for hemostasis and to increase the granulation of the graft bed.

The hair follicle is a complex of mesenchymal and epithelial cells acquiring different properties and characteristics responsible for fulfilling its inductive and regenerative role. The epidermal and dermal crosstalk induces morphogenesis and maintains hair follicle cycling properties. The hair follicle is enriched with pluripotent stem cells, where dermal papilla (DP) cells and dermal sheath (DS) cells constitute the dermal compartment and the epithelial stem cells existing in the bulge region exert their regenerative role by mediating the epithelial-mesenchymal interaction (EMI).

Hearing loss is highly related to acoustic injuries and mechanical damage of ear tissues. The mechanical responses of ear tissues are difficult to measure experimentally, especially cochlear hair cells within the organ of Corti (OC) at microscale. Finite element (FE) modeling has become an important tool for simulating acoustic wave transmission and studying cochlear mechanics.
