Novel Approach for the Accurate Determination of Se Isotope Ratio by Multicollector ICP-MS.

Anal Chem

December 2020

Faculty of Chemistry, Biological and Chemical Research Centre, University of Warsaw, Zwirki i Wigury 101, 02-093 Warsaw, Poland.

In this work, a method for the accurate and precise determination of Se/Se isotope ratio in natural samples of environmental and biological origin, using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in a wet plasma mode without using neither hydride generation nor separation of Se, was developed. It was based on the optimized regression model with standard-sample bracketing (ORM-SSB) to efficiently correct instrumental isotopic fractionation/mass bias and matrix effects. In addition, three mass bias correction models of SSB alone, SSB combined with internal standard (IS-SSB), and ORM-SSB were compared for the Se isotope ratio measurements.

Speciation of Selenium in Selenium-Enriched Sunflower Oil by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry/Electrospray-Orbitrap Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

The reaction of sunflower oil with selenite produces a complex mixture of selenitriglycerides with antioxidant and anticancer properties. To obtain insight into the identity and characteristics of the species formed, an analytical approach based on the combination of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with (78)Se-specific selenium detection by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) and high-resolution (100 000), high mass accuracy (<1 ppm) molecule-specific detection by electrospray-Orbitrap MS(3) was developed. For the first time, a non-aqueous mobile phase gradient was used in reversed-phase HPLC-ICP MS for the separation of a complex mixture of selenospecies and a mathematical correction of the background signal was developed.

Characterization of selenium-enriched wheat by agronomic biofortification.

J Food Sci Technol

July 2015

Department of Radiation Science and Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Delft University of Technology, Mekelweg 15, 2629 JB Delft, The Netherlands.

Agronomic biofortification of staple crops is an effective way to enhance their contents in essential nutrients up the food chain, with a view to correcting for their deficiencies in animal or human status. Selenium (Se) is one such case, for its uneven distribution in the continental crust and, therefore, in agricultural lands easily translates into substantial variation in nutritional intakes. Cereals are far from being the main sources of Se on a content basis, but they are likely the major contributors to intake on a dietary basis.
