We congratulate the authors for the new meta-analysis model that accounts for different outcomes. We discuss the modeling choice and the Bayesian setting, specifically, we point out the connection between the Bayesian hierarchical model and a mixed-effect model formulation to subsequently discuss possible future method extensions.

Leveraging external data information to supplement randomized clinical trials has been a popular topic in recent years, especially for medical device and drug discovery. In rare diseases, it is very challenging to recruit patients and run a large-scale randomized trial. To take advantage of real-world data from historical trials on the same disease, we can run a small hybrid trial and borrow historical controls to increase the power.

Background: With genetics thought to explain a portion of the overall risk of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), environmental risk factors in early life have been proposed. Previous studies on the incidence of T1DM in children or adolescents by gestational age at birth have yielded inconsistent results.
Objectives: To clarify the association between gestational age at birth and T1DM in childhood/adolescence and to offer evidence-based support for the prevention or screening of T1DM.
