Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of vertebral fracture (VF) in children with chronic liver disease (CLD) with and without liver transplantation (LT) and to determine the associated factors.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients aged 3-21 years with CLD both before and after LT were enrolled in the study. Lateral thoracolumbar spine radiographs were obtained and assessed for VF using Mäkitie's method. Clinical and biochemical data were collected.

Results: We enrolled 147 patients (80 females; median age 8.8 years [interquartile range 6.0-11.8]; 110 [74.8%] in the LT group and 37 [25.2%] in the non-LT group). VF was identified in 21 patients (14.3%): 17/110 (15.5%) in the LT group and 4/37 (10.8%) in the non-LT group (=0.54). Back pain was noted in only three patients with VF. In the univariate analysis, a height z-score below -2.0 (=0.010), pre-LT hepatopulmonary syndrome (=0.014), elevated serum direct and total bilirubin levels (=0.037 and =0.049, respectively), and vitamin D deficiency at 1-year post-LT (=0.048) were associated with VF in the LT group. In multivariate analysis, height z-score below -2.0 was the only significant associated factor (odds ratio, 5.94; 95% confidence interval, 1.49-23.76; =0.012) for VF. All VFs in the non-LT group were reported in males.

Conclusion: In children with CLD, VF is common before and after LT. Most patients with VF are asymptomatic. Screening for VF should be considered in patients with a height z-score below -2.0 after LT.

Introduction: Trochanteric fractures (TFs) are common in older individuals and are expected to increase with Japan's aging population. These fractures often result in poor long-term outcomes, such as decreased independent walking and reduced hospital discharge rates. A significant aspect of TF involves displacement of the lesser trochanter (LT), which can weaken hip flexor muscles and potentially affect the recovery of activities of daily living (ADLs), including walking.

This study examined how Mandarin-speaking preschoolers with and without a history of late talking (LT) process familiar monosyllabic words with unexpected lexical tones, focusing on both phonological and semantic violations. This study initially enrolled 64 Mandarin-speaking toddlers: 31 with a history of LT (mean age: 27.67 months) and 33 without a history of LT (non-LT) (mean age: 27.

Background: In May 2019, liver transplant (LT) allocation policy changed to limit MELD exception points for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to median MELD at transplant minus three (MMaT-3). We evaluated this policy's impact on waitlist outcomes for HCC candidates, by race and ethnicity, hypothesizing that the introduction of the MMaT-3 reduced inequities in waitlist outcomes.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients, including all adult LT candidates (N = 10 751) who received HCC exception points from May 17, 2017 to May 18, 2019 (pre-policy; N = 6627) to May 19, 2019 to March 1, 2021 (post-policy; N = 4124).

Quantitative myocardial perfusion in liver transplantation candidates: Poorly metabolized caffeine inhibition of vasodilatory stress.

J Nucl Cardiol

August 2024

Martin Bucksbaum Distinguished University Chair, Weatherhead PET Center for Preventing and Reversing Atherosclerosis, McGovern Medical School, University of Texas, Houston, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Data on cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) in liver transplantation (LT) candidates are limited with no prior study accounting for poorly metabolized caffeine reducing stress perfusion.

Method: Consecutive LT candidates (n = 114) undergoing cardiac rest/stress PET were instructed to abstain from caffeine for 2 days extended to 5 and 7 days. Due to persistently high prevalence of measurable blood caffeine after 5-day caffeine abstinence, dipyridamole (n = 41) initially used was changed to dobutamine (n = 73).
