Objective: To explore the preventive effect of electroacupuncture pretreatment on stroke in rats by inhibiting ferroptosis and oxidative stress.

Methods: Rats were randomly assigned to the sham, middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R), MCAO/R + EP, MCAO/R + EP + erastin, and MCAO/R + EP + ferrostatin 1 groups. Daily electroacupuncture was performed 2 weeks before establishing the MCAO/R model utilizing the modified Zea Longa suture method. Rats were sacrificed 1 day after reperfusion, and brain tissues were collected. They were prepared for hematoxylin and eosin staining, prussian blue staining, transmission electron microscope. Measurement of total iron levels using a commercial kit, detection of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels by ELISA, and examination of 15-lox2, GPX4, SLC7A11, ACSL4, and TFR1 by western blotting.

Results: Compared with sham rats, cerebral infarction size was dramatically larger in MCAO/R rats. Moreover, the MCAO/R group displayed damaged mitochondria with a disarranged structure of cristae; free iron, total iron levels, and oxidative stress were significantly higher. Cerebral pathological lesions, oxidative stress, total iron levels, and protein levels of ACSL4, TFR1, and 15-lox2 were significantly reduced in the MCAO/R + EP and MCAO/R + EP + ferrostatin 1 groups, while the protective effect of electroacupuncture pretreatment on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury was inhibited by treatment with the ferroptosis activator erastin.

Conclusion: Electroacupuncture pretreatment can protect rats from cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury by reducing the area of cerebral infarction and inhibiting ferroptosis and oxidative stress.

Aim: Given that electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment inhibits lactate production and lactate-derived lysine lactation (Kla) aggravates ischemic brain injury, we aimed to investigate whether the formation of Kla protein is involved in EA pretreatment to alleviate ischemic brain injury.

Methods: EA was performed on the Baihui acupoint (GV20) of male C57BL/6J mice before receiving the permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) surgery. Western blot and immunofluorescent staining were used to observe neuronal survival, astrocyte activation, and protein Kla levels, and the lactate levels in ischemic brains were assayed with a commercial kit.

Electroacupuncture pretreatment ameliorates Golgi stress and the inflammation response against endotoxin-induced lung injury.

Tianjin Nankai Hospital, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China; Institute of Integrative Medicine for Acute Abdominal Diseases, Tianjin, China; Tianjin Key Laboratory of Acute Abdomen Disease Associated Organ Injury and ITCWM Repair, Tianjin, China. Electronic address:

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition involving organ dysfunction characterized by a generalized inflammatory syndrome, and the associated mortality rate is high. Electroacupuncture (EA) exerts benefits in endotoxemia-induced lung injury, mainly through lung inflammation reduction and cellular homeostasis, although the anti-inflammatory mechanisms underlying these benefits remain to be completely understood.

Methods: Mice were pretreated with EA or sham EA therapy 5 days prior to the induction of endotoxemia through the administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP).

Article Synopsis
  • The TRPM8 ion channel is important for regulating inflammation and pain perception, but its role in electroacupuncture (EA) as a pain relief method is not well understood.
  • EA effectively reduces mechanical pain sensitivity in mice with induced inflammatory pain, with different responses observed between wild-type and TRPM8-deficient mice.
  • The study findings indicate that while EA activates both opioid and cannabinoid pathways for pain relief, TRPM8 is essential for the opioid pathway's effectiveness; inhibiting TRPM8 shifts reliance to the cannabinoid system for analgesia.

Objective: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture pretreatment on the quality of recovery in the patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery.

Methods: Sixty patients for elective laparoscopic resection of gastrointestinal tumors under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to either an observation group or a control group, with 30 patients in each group. In the control group, the routine inhalation-intravenous combined general anesthesia was adopted.

Objective: To explore the mechanism of electroacupuncture pretreatment (EP) for relieving post-stroke spasticity in rats.

Methods: Eighteen rats were randomized equally into sham-operated group, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) group, and MCAO+EP group. In MCAO+EP group, the rats received electroacupuncture at the acupoints Qubin and Baihui for 3 consecutive days prior to MCAO.
