Micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) are detected in human liver, and pose significant risks to human health. Oral exposure to MNPs derived from non-biodegradable plastics can induce toxicity in mouse liver. Similarly, nasal exposure to non-biodegradable plastics can cause airway dysbiosis in mice. However, the hepatotoxicity induced by foodborne and airborne biodegradable MNPs remains poorly understood. Here we show the hepatotoxic effects of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) MNPs through multi-omics analysis of various biological samples from mice, including gut, fecal, nasal, lung, liver, and blood samples. Our results show that both foodborne and airborne PLA MNPs compromise liver function, disrupt serum antioxidant activity, and cause liver pathology. Specifically, foodborne MNPs lead to gut microbial dysbiosis, metabolic alterations in the gut and serum, and liver transcriptomic changes. Airborne MNPs affect nasal and lung microbiota, alter lung and serum metabolites, and disrupt liver transcriptomics. The gut Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group is a potential biomarker for foodborne PLA MNP exposure, while nasal unclassifiedMuribaculaceae and lung are potential biomarkers for airborne PLA MNP exposure. The relevant results suggest that foodborne PLA MNPs could affect the "gut microbiota-gut-liver" axis and induce hepatoxicity, while airborne PLA MNPs could disrupt the "airway microbiota-lung-liver" axis and cause hepatoxicity. These findings have implications for diagnosing PLA MNPs-induced hepatotoxicity and managing biodegradable materials in the environment. Our current study could be a starting point for biodegradable MNPs-induced hepatotoxicity. More research is needed to verify and inhibit the pathways that are crucial to MNPs-induced hepatotoxicity.

An ultra-sensitive fluorescent biosensor based on CDs/QDs@ZIF-8 and microfluidic fluidized bed was developed for rapid and ultra-sensitive detection of multiple target bacteria. The zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) act as the carrier to encapsulate three kinds of fluorescence signal molecules from the CDs/QDs@ZIF-8 signal amplification system. Besides, three kinds of target pathogenic bacteria were automatically, continuously, and circularly captured by the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the microfluidic fluidized bed.

A lateral flow assay (LFA) strip based on dual 5,5'-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB)-encoded satellite FeO@Au (Mag@Au) SERS tags with nanogap is reported for  ultrasensitive and simultaneous diagnosis of two SARS-CoV-2 functional proteins. Composed of FeO core, satellite gold shell with nanogaps, and double-layer DTNB, the Mag@Au nanoparticles with an average size of 238 nm were designed as multifunctional tags to efficiently enrich the target SARS-CoV-2 protein from complex samples, significantly enhancing the SERS signal of the LFA strip and provide quantitative SERS detection of analyte on test lines. The developed dual DTNB-encoded satellite Mag@Au-based LFA allowed simultaneous quantification of spike (S) protein and nucleocapsid (NP) protein with detection limits of 23 pg mL and 2 pg mL, respectively, lower than commercial ELISA kits and reported SERS-LFA detection system-based Au NPs and FeO@3 nm Au MNPs.

Purpose: Breast cancer has become the leading cause of cancer mortality in women. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting programmed death-1 (PD-1) are promising, it remains unclear whether PD-L1 expression on circulating tumor cells (CTCs) has predictive and prognostic values in predicting and stratifying metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients who can benefit from anti-PD-1 immunotherapy.

Methods: Twenty six MBC patients that received anti-PD-1 immunotherapy were enrolled in this study.

The main challenges in bio-catalysis of d-phenyllactic acid (D-PLA) are poor tolerance of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) to harsh environmental conditions and inability to recycle the catalyst. A novel magnetic framework composite was prepared as solid support for the immobilization of enzymes one-pot encapsulation in this study. LDH/MNPs@MAF-7 was synthesized by the one-pot encapsulation of both LDH and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in MAF-7.
