Background: Carotid body tumors extending to the skull base are hypervascular tumors which are difficult to access using a traditional lateral cervical approach. Preoperative embolization can reduce intraoperative blood loss.

Case Presentation: We report two patients with a carotid body tumor extending to the skull base who underwent preoperative embolization of the external carotid artery using an Amplatzer vascular plug. Two days after embolization, surgical resection was performed. Embolization was successful in both patients and resection proceeded smoothly. Both were discharged on postoperative day 9 without complications. The tumor in each patient was classified as Shamblin group III. Computed tomography angiography of the neck six months after surgery showed patency of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery and no tumor recurrence.

Conclusion: Preoperative embolization of the external carotid artery using the Amplatzer vascular plug is safe and feasible for patients with carotid body tumors extending to the skull base.

Objective: To evaluate the concentrations of CC-chemokines and stable metabolites of nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in patients with atherothrombotic (AT) and cardioembolic (CE) subtypes of ischemic stroke (IS) in the acute period.

Material And Methods: Sixty patients diagnosed with IS in the carotid basin were examined. Group 1 included 30 patients with AT, group 2 - 30 patients with CE subtype of IS.

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has recently been recognized as a novel biomarker associated with various cardiovascular conditions. This study aims to investigate the relationship between RDW and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) in a southern Chinese population. A total of 4916 patients were initially enrolled from the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University between January 2016 and December 2022.

Head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs) are typically slow-growing, hormonally inactive tumors of parasympathetic paraganglia. Inactivation of prolyl-hydroxylase domain-containing 2 protein causing indirect gain-of-function of hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α), encoded by EPAS1, was recently shown to cause carotid body hyperplasia. We previously described a syndrome with multiple sympathetic paragangliomas caused by direct gain-of-function variants in EPAS1 (Pacak-Zhuang syndrome, PZS) and developed a corresponding mouse model.

Purpose: Our aim was to update evidence-based and consensus-based recommendations for the inhospital endovascular management of haemorrhage and vascular lesions in patients with multiple and/or severe injuries based on current evidence. This guideline topic is part of the 2022 update of the German Guideline on the Treatment of Patients with Multiple and/or Severe Injuries.

Methods: MEDLINE and Embase were systematically searched to June 2021.
