Despite plenty of human studies on changes in thyroid hormones after stroke and some animal studies that assessed the effects of thyroid hormone administration on stroke, conclusive evidence for clinical application is lacking. This review aimed to determine the consistency of the results between clinical and preclinical studies. This article reviewed the PubMed, Embase, web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar databases up to June 2023 using the MeSH terms "stroke, cerebral ischemia, cerebral infarction, brain ischemia, brain infarction, triiodothyronine (T), tetraiodothyronine (T), thyroxine (T), and thyroid hormone". The results of clinical and preclinical studies related to T substantially confirm each other. That is, in most human studies lower T was associated with poor outcomes, and in experimental studies, T administration also had therapeutic effects. However, the results of experimental studies related to T could not support those of clinical studies. There seem to be some conflicts between experimental and human studies, especially regarding changes and effects of T after stroke. The gap between experimental and clinical studies may lead to non-applicable results, wasting time and money, and unnecessary killing of animals.

How SNARE proteins generate force to fuse membranes.

Biophys J

January 2025

Department of Chemical Engineering, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027. Electronic address:

Membrane fusion is central to fundamental cellular processes such as exocytosis, when an intracellular machinery fuses membrane-enclosed vesicles to the plasma membrane for contents release. The core machinery components are the SNARE proteins. SNARE complexation pulls the membranes together, but the fusion mechanism remains unclear.

Review of upper extremity passive joint impedance identification in people with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

J Neuroeng Rehabil

January 2025

Department of BioMechanical Engineering, Delft University of Technology, Mekelweg 2, Delft, 2628 CD, South-Holland, The Netherlands.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) progressively leads to loss of limb function due to muscle weakness. The incurable nature of the disease shifts the focus to improving quality of life, including assistive supports to improve arm function. Over time, the passive joint impedance (Jimp) of people with DMD increases.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can be used in a variety of clinical settings and is a safe and powerful tool for ultrasound-trained healthcare providers, such as physicians and nurses; however, the effectiveness of ultrasound education for nursing students remains unclear. This prospective cohort study aimed to examine the sustained educational impact of bladder ultrasound simulation among nursing students.

Methods: To determine whether bladder POCUS simulation exercises sustainably improve the clinical proficiency regarding ultrasound examinations among nursing students, evaluations were conducted before and after the exercise and were compared with those after the 1-month follow-up exercise.

Background: Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) especially antagonistic ones present significant risks to patient safety, underscoring the urgent need for reliable prediction methods. Recently, substructure-based DDI prediction has garnered much attention due to the dominant influence of functional groups and substructures on drug properties. However, existing approaches face challenges regarding the insufficient interpretability of identified substructures and the isolation of chemical substructures.
