Polymer-based nanoparticles (NPs) that react to altered physiological characteristics have the potential to enhance the delivery of therapeutics to a specific area. These materials can utilize biochemical triggers, such as low pH, which is prone to happen locally in an inflammatory microenvironment due to increased cellular activity. This reduced pH is neutralized when inflammation subsides. For precise delivery of therapeutics to match this dynamic reaction, drug delivery systems (DDS) need to not only release the drug (ON) but also stop the release (OFF) autonomously. In this study, we use a systematic approach to optimize the composition of acetalated dextran (AcDex) NPs to start (ON) and stop (OFF) releasing model cargo, depending on local pH changes. By mixing ratios of AcDex polymers (mixed NPs), we achieved a highly sensitive material that was able to rapidly release cargo when going from pH 7.4 to pH 6.0. At the same time, the mix also offered a stable composition that enabled a rapid ON/OFF/ON/OFF switching within this narrow pH range in only 90 min. These mixed NPs were also sensitive to biological pH changes, with increased release in the presence of inflammatory cells compared to healthy cells. Such precise and controllable characteristics of a DDS position mixed NPs as a potential treatment platform to inhibit disease flare-ups, reducing both systemic and local side effects to offer a superior treatment option for inflammation compared to conventional systems.

Highly stable foams co-stabilized by nanoparticles (NPs) and biopolymer have good foaming ability and foam stability, which ensures the reliability and efficiency of the foam during the fire extinguishing process. It is worth noting that the addition of NPs and biopolymers significantly affects the flow characteristics of the foam in the pipeline and its structural stability, which play a key role in the fire extinguishing process. Therefore, it is very important to understand the effect of the addition of different types of biopolymers on the rheological properties of nano-stabilized foams.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the Newbridge Prognosis Score (NPS), a prognostic questionnaire designed for use by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) when an anorexia nervosa (AN) patient is discharged from an inpatient treatment facility for eating disorders. The tool integrates the collective judgment of MDT members to predict short-term outcomes in adolescents with AN, focusing on physical, psychological, and behavioural factors and systematically assessing psychopathology, weight, and continued treatment needs. This information is intended to guide individualized community support, enhance post-discharge recovery, and aid in the allocation of limited community-based resources.

The underlying mechanisms of mild behavioral impairment (MBI), a marker for cognitive impairment and dementia, have remained unclear especially in a multiethnic Asian population. The study aimed to examine whether baseline Alzheimer disease biomarkers, including plasma neurofilament light (NfL) chain, phosphorylated tau-181 (p-tau181), and the p-tau181-to-amyloid-β42 (p-tau181/Aβ42) ratio, could predict MBI incidence in dementia-free Asian older adults. Participants were recruited from the community and memory clinics from August 2010 to April 2022.

Modelling phosphorus inputs and dynamics in a large tropical semiarid basin.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

March 2025

Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, Federal University of Ceará - UFC, BLB 713, Center of Technology, Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil.

This study proposed a simple process-based model to predict total phosphorus (TP) inputs and dynamics in a large tropical semiarid basin in Brazil (19,015 km), where the Castanhão dam, the largest non-hydropower reservoir in Latin America, is located. The model solved on a monthly basis the water balance and TP dynamics along the river system, considering complete mixing at the cross-section, steady-state regime, and a piston-type transport with first-order decay. Both primary and secondary data were used to validate the model, with deviations of up to about 20%.

Green Formaldehyde-Free Electroless Plating Mechanism, Kinetics, and Sustainable Bath Recycling for Conductive Copper Patterns.

Langmuir

March 2025

State Key Lab of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.

This research investigates the mechanism, kinetics, and sustainable bath recycling of a green formaldehyde-free electroless plating copper process for conductive copper patterns based on core-shell magnetic copper-coated-nickel nanoparticles (Ni@Cu NPs) catalyzed, which aims to understand the mechanisms governing the deposition process, optimize the plating conditions, explore the recycling of the plating bath for green fabrication flexible printed circuits (FPCs), and reduce waste discharge. By establishing mathematical models of mass transfer and electrochemical reactions to simulate the electroless plating process, the models revealed the changing trends of mixing potential, current density, and deposition thickness and can predict the progress of the electroless plating reaction. Additionally, the work establishes comprehensive kinetic equations, identifying the effects of various factors such as temperature, pH, and reactant concentration on the reaction rate and process efficiency.
