Background: Spontaneous orbital cephaloceles are a rare condition. The purpose of this study is to provide a description of a clinical case and to carry out a systematic literature review.

Methods: A systematic review of the English literature published on the Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted, according to the PRISMA recommendations.

Results: A 6-year-old patient was admitted for right otomastoiditis and thrombosis of the sigmoid and transverse sinuses, as well as the proximal portion of the internal jugular vein. Radiological examinations revealed a left orbital mass (22 × 14 mm) compatible with asymptomatic orbital meningocele (MC) herniated from the superior orbital fissure (SOF). The child underwent a right mastoidectomy. After the development of symptoms and signs of intracranial hypertension (ICH), endovascular thrombectomy and transverse sinus stenting were performed, with improvement of the clinical conditions and reduction of the orbital MC. The systematic literature review encompassed 29 publications on 43 patients with spontaneous orbital MC. In the majority of cases, surgery was the preferred treatment.

Conclusions: The present case report and systematic review highlight the importance of ICH investigation and a pathophysiological-oriented treatment approach. The experiences described in the literature are limited, making the collection of additional data paramount.

Phthalocyanine nickel enhanced composite solid-state electrolytes with homogenous and fast Li-ion conduction for high-voltage Li-metal batteries.

J Colloid Interface Sci

December 2024

Key Laboratory of New Energy Development and Energy Storage Technology of Handan, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Hebei University of Engineering, Handan 056038, People's Republic of China.

Herein, a novel composite solid-state polymer electrolytes (CSEs) was regulated by introducing CoNi-MOF (Metal-organic framework) @NiPc (Nickel phthalocyanine) nanofiller (CMN) into PEO (polyethylene oxide) matrix. In this novel system, the NiPc uniformly wrapped around the surface of MOF through hydrogen bond bridging, avoiding the agglomeration of the MOF particles. The chemisorption between Ni in NiPc and the O atoms in the bis(triffuoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion (TFSI) restricted the mobility of the anions within the CSEs, which improved the release of Li ions from the NiPcLi.

Comprehensive determination of elements ranging from uranium to americium by hybrid measurement of fluorescent and spontaneously emitted characteristic X-rays.

Natural uranium isotopes have extremely long half-lives; therefore, analytical methods based on the number of atoms, such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, are suitable for uranium detection. However, XRF measurements cannot be used to detect the major isotopes of americium when present in amounts barely detectable using radiation measurements, owing to their relatively short half-lives. Because of α-decay-induced internal conversion, where orbital electrons are emitted instead of γ-rays, these nuclides emit characteristic X-rays.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials hold great promise for the next-generation optoelectronics applications, many of which, including solar cell, rely on the efficient dissociation of exciton into free charge carriers. However, photoexcitation in atomically thin 2D semiconductors typically produces exciton with a binding energy of ~500 meV, an order of magnitude larger than thermal energy at room temperature. This inefficient exciton dissociation can limit the efficiency of photovoltaics.

Objective: This systematic review aims to consolidate and analyze the existing evidence on Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) in the pediatric population, focusing on clinical features, diagnostic challenges, treatment outcomes, and prognosis.

Background: Tolosa-Hunt syndrome is a rare headache disorder caused by idiopathic inflammation of the cavernous sinus, orbital apex, or orbit, resulting in neuro-ophthalmological manifestations. It is uniquely characterized by cranial nerve palsies and often responds well to steroids.

Superior oblique paresis following endoscopic brow lift.

J AAPOS

December 2024

Isfahan eye research center, Department of Ophthalmology, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. Electronic address:

Endoscopic brow lift (EBL) surgery, performed for cosmetic purposes, carries a small risk for postoperative superior oblique paresis leading to diplopia. We report 2 cases of diplopia after EBL. In the first, a 54-year-old woman was diagnosed with right eye superior oblique paresis, which was confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revealed trochlear region enhancement.
