In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the possibility of temporal nonlocality, mirroring the spatial nonlocality supposedly evidenced by the Bell correlations. In this context, Glick (2019) has argued that timelike entanglement and temporal nonlocality is demonstrated in delayed-choice entanglement swapping (DCES) experiments, like that of Ma et al. (2012), Megidish et al. (2013) and Hensen et al. (2015). I will argue that a careful analysis of these experiments shows that they in fact display nothing more than "ordinary" spacelike entanglement, and that any purported timelike entanglement is an artefact of selection bias. Regardless any other reason one may have for challenging the assumption of temporal locality, timelike entanglement as evidenced by these experiments is not among them. I conclude by discussing what lessons on the nature of entanglement might be drawn from an examination of DCES experiments.

The goal of quantum metrology is to improve measurements' sensitivities by harnessing quantum resources. Metrologists often aim to maximize the quantum Fisher information, which bounds the measurement setup's sensitivity. In studies of fundamental limits on metrology, a paradigmatic setup features a qubit (spin-half system) subject to an unknown rotation.

Nonclassical Advantage in Metrology Established via Quantum Simulations of Hypothetical Closed Timelike Curves.

Phys Rev Lett

Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science, NIST and University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland 20742, USA.

We construct a metrology experiment in which the metrologist can sometimes amend the input state by simulating a closed timelike curve, a worldline that travels backward in time. The existence of closed timelike curves is hypothetical. Nevertheless, they can be simulated probabilistically by quantum-teleportation circuits.

Pseudoentropy in dS/CFT and Timelike Entanglement Entropy.

Phys Rev Lett

January 2023

Center for Gravitational Physics, Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Kitashirakawa Oiwakecho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8502, Japan.

We study holographic entanglement entropy in dS/CFT and introduce timelike entanglement entropy in CFTs. Both of them take complex values in general and are related with each other via an analytical continuation. We argue that they are correctly understood as pseudoentropy.

The Unruh effect can not only arise out of the entanglement between modes of left and right Rindler wedges, but also between modes of future and past light cones. We explore the geometric phase resulting from this timelike entanglement between the future and past, showing that it can be captured in a simple Λ system. This provides an alternative paradigm to the Unruh-deWitt detector.
