It is increasingly prevalent at the end of life in patients with cancer. While non-pharmacological nursing interventions are essential for delirium prevention, their effectiveness in terminally ill patients with cancer remains unclear.

Those with neurodegenerative conditions have an increased risk of developing delirium and there is some evidence that delirium may be a risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders. Similar to the interactions between sleep and neurodegenerative conditions, there is increasing evidence for bi-directional relationships between delirium and sleep disorders and disturbances. This presentation will provide an overview of the literature on those relationships, including discussion of the well-characterized changes in sleep that occur in individuals experiencing delirium.

Purpose: Numerous studies have identified a correlation between sleep and delirium; however, the causal relationship remains ambiguous. This bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was conducted to examine the possible causal relationships between sleep traits and delirium.
Patients And Methods: Utilizing genome-wide association studies (GWAS), we identified ten sleep traits: chronotype, sleep duration, short sleep duration, long sleep duration, daytime napping, daytime sleepiness, insomnia, number of sleep episodes (NSE), sleep efficiency, and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD).

They are characterized by varying clusters of somatic, autonomic, and psychiatric symptoms.
