Synthesis, spectroscopic and theoretical characterization of a hitherto unknown - N-confused -methylpyrrole-bridged doubly N-confused hexaphyrin (molecule 5) and its organometallic copper(II) complex (molecule 6) are reported herein. The absence of Q-type bands in the UV-Vis spectrum and the high chemical shifts of the inner proton signals of 5 suggest its globally non-aromaticity. The spectroscopic evidence of non-aromaticity for 5 and the paramagnetic nature of 6, are fully supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the UV-Vis spectra, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) -tensor parameters, and the magnetically induced current density strengths obtained with the gauge-including magnetically induced currents (GIMIC) method.

Edible electronics is emerging in recent years motivated by a diverse number of healthcare applications, where sensors can be safely ingested without the need for any medical supervision. However, the current lack of stable and well-performing edible semiconductors needs to be addressed to reach technological maturity and allow the surge of a new generation of edible circuits. In the quest for good-performing edible semiconductors, this study has explored the possibility of considering materials that are not regulated for intentional ingestion, yet are daily swallowed with no adverse reactions, such as pigments contained in toothpaste.

Although organometallic porous polymer networks are recognized as promising heterogeneous catalysts, the relationship between ligand/monomer geometry and network parameters is usually not well understood due to the lack of atom-resolved characterization methods for the amorphous network matrix. In this work, a series of copper(II) salen-type metal complexes was synthesized, using - and -1,2-diaminocyclohexane segments, and thoroughly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solution- and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Terminal ethynyl groups of the complexes were then transformed into polyacetylene chains by coordination chain-growth homopolymerization, resulting in highly porous (458-655 m g) organometallic polymer networks with a copper(II) ion content of about 12 wt%.

Chromones are well known as fundamental structural elements found in numerous natural compounds and medicinal substances. The Schiff bases of chromones have a much wider range of pharmacological applications such as antitumor, antioxidant, anti-HIV, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. A lot of research has been carried out on chromone-based copper(ii) Schiff-base complexes owing to their role in the organometallic domain and promise as potential bioactive cores.
