The utilization of non-animal-derived materials to imitate cartilage is critical for the advancement of plant-based simulated meat. In this study, gellan gum (GG), konjac glucomannan (KGM), and wheat fiber (WF) were used to construct hydrogel, and the mechanical strength, water properties, and microstructure were regulated by constructing Ca cross-links and moisture control. The hardness, chewiness, resilience, shear force, and shear energy of the Ca cross-linked samples were significantly improved. Extrusion dehydration further changes the related mechanical properties of the hydrogel and results in a tighter microstructure. The findings suggest that the establishment of Ca cross-links and water regulation are efficacious techniques for modifying the texture of the GG/KGM/WF composite hydrogel. Correlation analysis and sensory evaluation showed that the test indexes and sensory scores of the samples with Ca crosslinking and 80 % moisture content were similar to chicken breast cartilage, and the samples with Ca crosslinking and 70 % moisture content were similar to pig crescent bone. This study presents a framework for designing edible cartilage simulators using polysaccharide hydrogels, with implications for enhancing the resemblance of plant-based meat products to real meat and expanding the range of vegetarian offerings available.

Improving the adsorption capacity of materials for pollutants by means of modification is an important direction in the research of water treatment technology. To improve the applicability of sodium alginate composites in the field of adsorption, magnetic sodium alginate-based hydrogel microsphere adsorbent material FeO@SA/PEI-Fe (FSPF) was synthesized in a single step by using polyethyleneimine grafting modification of sodium alginate by sol-gel method. The material was used for the removal of direct blue GL (DB 200) and direct date red B (DR 13) from simulated wastewater, as well as Cu(II) and Pb(II) from simulated wastewater with heavy metal ions.

Hyperthermia has emerged as a popular treatment option due to its high efficacy and seamless integration with other therapeutic approaches. To enhance treatment outcomes, hydrogels loaded with photothermal agents and activated by near-infrared (NIR) light for localized tumor therapy have attracted considerable attention. This approach minimizes drug dosage and mitigates the adverse effects of systemic drug delivery on healthy tissues.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH), marked by exposed dentinal tubules, presents as a sharp toothache triggered by stimuli and subsides when the stimuli are removed. To address the limitations of current commercial desensitizers in terms of acid resistance, friction resistance, and stability, a black phosphorus nanosheet-composited methacrylate gelatin hydrogel (GelMA/BP) is developed for DH treatment, leveraging the synergistic effects of photothermal therapy and biomineralization. Incorporating the BP nanosheet provided GelMA/BP with a stable photothermal response and the continuous release of phosphate anions, which blocked dentinal tubules by converting light energy into heat and initiating biomineralization.

To address the rising prevalence of bacterial infections and the need for innovative therapeutic solutions, this study has developed a novel antibacterial hydrogel composite composed of Aloe vera, gelatin, sodium alginate, and Sterculia monosperma-silver nanoparticles (SM-AgNPs) loaded curcumin-nanoliposomes (NLPs). The aloe vera/gelatin/sodium alginate hydrogels (AGS) are prepared using different weight ratios of Aloe vera, gelatin, and sodium alginate, aiming to optimize mechanical properties and biocompatibility for biomedical applications. The incorporation of SM-AgNPs and curcumin-loaded NLPs enhanced the hydrogels' antibacterial properties.

Recently, there has been increased attention on the treatment of cartilage repair. Overall, we constructed PHBVHHx-COL, a composite hydrogel of PHBVHHx-co-PEG and collagen, and evaluated its cartilage repair efficacy through and studies using hydrogel loaded with peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PBMSCs). Rheological properties and compressive mechanical properties of the hydrogels were systematically evaluated.
