Topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) dominate the low-frequency variability of deep ocean currents and play a crucial role in energy exchange and material mixing. On the continental slope of the southwestern South China Sea, a deep-water mooring was deployed to observe TRWs for a period of ~ 40 days. The TRWs, with a wavelength of 109 km, account for 41.3% of the subinertial variations. A ray-tracing model was applied to investigate the propagation and energy source. The results showed that the TRWs propagated from the northeast of the mooring location and were most likely caused by the mesoscale eddy disturbances off the Vietnam coast. This study provides a new perspective on examining the impact of mesoscale eddies off Vietnam on abyssal currents.

The downslope plumes of dense shelf water (DSW) are critical for the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), and thus to the exchange of heat and carbon between surface and abyssal ocean. Previous studies have shown that tides and overflow-forced topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) may have strong impact on the downslope transport of DSW, but it remains unclear how the combined action of these two processes influence the descent processes of DSW, and of the resulting AABW properties. Here, with a synthesis of historical in situ observations and a set of numerical model experiments, we show that tides and TRWs play comparable roles in AABW formation: they both act to accelerate DSW descent to the abyss, leading to the formation of colder and denser AABW.

Tracing Organophosphate Ester Pollutants in Hadal Trenches─Distribution, Possible Origins, and Transport Mechanisms.

Environ Sci Technol

Unraveling the mysterious pathways of pollutants to the deepest oceanic realms holds critical importance for assessing the integrity of remote marine ecosystems. This study tracks the transport of pollutants into the depths of the oceans, a key step in protecting the sanctity of these least explored ecosystems. By analyzing hadal trench samples from the Mariana, Mussau, and New Britain trenches, we found the widespread distribution of organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants but a complex transport pattern for the OPE in these regions.

Numerical modeling of internal tides and submesoscale turbulence in the US Caribbean regional ocean.

The US Caribbean ocean circulation is governed by an influx of Atlantic water through the passages between Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Virgin Islands, and an interplay of the Caribbean Sea water with the local topography of the region. We present an analysis of the US Caribbean ocean flow simulated by the USCROMS; which is the ROMS AGRIF model configured for the US Caribbean regional ocean at a horizontal resolution of 2 km. Outputs from the USCROMS show a seasonal variability in the strength of submesoscale turbulence within a mixed layer whose depth varies from -70 to -20 m from winter to summer, and internal tides originating from the passages between the islands.

Heatwaves are persistent temperature extremes associated with devastating impacts on human societies and ecosystems. In the midlatitudes, amplified quasi-stationary Rossby waves have been identified as a key mechanism for heatwave occurrence. Amplified waves with preferred longitudinal locations lead to concurrent extremes in specific locations.
