Berlin Heart EXCOR sVAD implantation technique for neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation.

Multimed Man Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Congenital Heart Center, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

The Berlin Heart EXCOR is a pulsatile paracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD) for neonates, infants, children and adults with congenital or acquired severe ventricular dysfunction. Berlin Heart EXCOR VADs are routinely used as either a bridge to a cardiac transplantation, or occasionally as a bridge to ventricular recovery. Our programmatic philosophy is to bridge neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation or functionally univentricular ductal-dependent pulmonary circulation who are at high risk for staged palliation because of important cardiac risk factors with a single-ventricle VAD (sVAD) as a bridge to a cardiac transplant.

Functional cognition is relevant for athletic success and interdependent with physical exercise, yet despite repeatedly demonstrated inflammatory responses to physical training, there are no studies addressing the relationship between cognition and inflammation in athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive performance and selected inflammatory, and further physiological biomarkers in elite athletes. Data from 350 elite athletes regarding cognitive performance (processing speed, selective attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility), systemic inflammatory markers, metabolic hormones, growth factors, tissue damage markers, and micronutrients (e.

Increased FGF-19 levels following explantation in women with breast implant illness.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Section General Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Amsterdam University Medical Centres, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Breast Implant Illness (BII) is characterized by a cluster of systemic and local symptoms affecting a subset of women with silicone breast implants. While symptom improvement is frequently observed following implant removal, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, and the absence of reliable biomarkers complicates clinical decision-making. Here, we investigate inflammatory protein profiles in 43 women with BII, comparing pre- and post-explantation levels using the Olink Target 96 Inflammation panel and Meso Scale Discovery technology for absolute quantification.

Ketogenesis is a dynamic metabolic conduit supporting hepatic fat oxidation particularly when carbohydrates are in short supply. Ketone bodies may be recycled into anabolic substrates, but a physiological role for this process has not been identified. Here, we use mass spectrometry-based C-isotope tracing and shotgun lipidomics to establish a link between hepatic ketogenesis and lipid anabolism.

Manual wheelchair training programs: a scoping review of educational approaches and intended learning outcomes.

BMC Med Educ

January 2025

School of Allied Health Science and Practice, Engineering Math and Science Building, University of Adelaide, North Terrace, Level 4, Adelaide, South Australia, 5005, Australia.

Background: Training programs grounded in educational theory offer a systematic framework to facilitate learning and outcomes. This scoping review aims to map the educational approaches documented for manual wheelchair training and to record intended learning outcomes and any relationships between learning theories, instructional design and outcomes.

Methods: Eight databases; Cochrane's Library, EMBASE, CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, EmCare, Medline, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Database and grey literature were searched in September 2023, with citation chaining for relevant papers.
