Persistent molecules, such as pesticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals, pose significant threats to both the environment and human health. Advancements in developing efficient photocatalysts for degrading these substances can play a fundamental role in remediating contaminated environments, thereby enhancing safety for all forms of life. This study investigates the enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency achieved by incorporating La into AgPO, using the co-precipitation method in an aqueous medium. These materials were utilized in the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light irradiation, with monitoring conducted through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The synthesized materials exhibited improved stability and photodegradation levels for RhB. Particularly noteworthy was the 2% La-incorporated sample (APL2), which achieved a 32.6% mineralization of CIP, nearly three times higher than pure AgPO. Toxicological analysis of the residue from CIP photodegradation using the microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata revealed high toxicity due to the leaching of Ag  ions from the catalyst. This underscores the necessity for cautious wastewater disposal after using the photocatalyst. The toxicity of the APL2 photocatalysts was thoroughly assessed through comprehensive toxicological tests involving embryo development in Danio rerio, revealing its potential to induce death and malformations in zebrafish embryos, even at low concentrations. This emphasizes the importance of meticulous management. Essentially, this study adeptly delineated a thorough toxicological profile intricately intertwined with the photocatalytic efficacy of newly developed catalysts and the resultant waste produced, prompting deliberations on the disposal of degraded materials post-exposure to photocatalysts.

Increasing antimony (Sb) pollution has become a global concern, but there is still a lack of economically efficient adsorbents for its remediation. In this study, a novel remediation material was developed by precipitating TiO onto waste herb-residue biochar (named TBC). The effectiveness and adsorption mechanisms of the material for Sb(III) removal were investigated through adsorption experiments, and the enhancement pathway of traditional herb decoction on the effectiveness of modified biochar was analyzed.

Hydrogen gas (H) can be produced via entirely solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting (PWS). A promising set of organic materials for facilitating PWS are the so-called inverted singlet-triplet, INVEST, materials. Inversion of the singlet (S) and triplet (T) energies reduces the population of triplet states, which are otherwise destructive under photocatalytic conditions.

The improper handling and uncontrolled discharge of toxic organic dyes result in significant adverse effects on both human health and the environment. This study investigates the fabrication of SnO₂, yttrium and cobalt dual-doped SnO₂ (YCSn), chitosan-capped SnO₂ (CS*Sn), and chitosan-capped yttrium and cobalt dual-doped SnO₂ (CS*YCSn) nanoparticles using a one-step coprecipitation method for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. Characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry confirm the successful synthesis of biodegradable CS*YCSn nanoparticles.

Synergism of piezoelectricity and photocatalysis is an effective approach for pollutant degradation and removal, and has garnered considerable attention. Nonetheless, great challenges still remain in recombination and slow migration rate of charge carriers. For response, a novel Three-in-One strategy based on MXene/ZnS/FeO (MZF) was developed to enhance the piezoelectric photocatalytic activity via achieving a triple effect: Dual Schottky heterojunction, Interface electric field, and Oxygen vacancy.
