Article Synopsis
  • - The arcuate eminence (AE) is a bony structure on the petrous bone that is critical for neurosurgery but lacks thorough analysis in the context of lateral skull base surgeries.
  • - This study aims to use the AE as a landmark to better locate the internal acoustic canal (IAC) during surgeries, introducing a new reference point called the "M-point."
  • - Research involving 40 temporal bones and 2 cadaveric heads showed the average distance from the M-point to the IAC is about 14.9 mm, providing a safer drilling area for surgeons.

The maxillary line is an important surgical landmark in the lateral nasal cavity. We investigated its location, variation, and relation to other landmarks in 47 formalin fixed cadaveric half-heads dissected in steps. Measurements and observations were made to describe the topography of the maxillary line, maxillary line midpoint (M-point), and their relationship with surgically important structures.

Resection of the temporal bone to various degrees provides different levels of access to lesions of the posterior fossa. However, precise distances to the petrosal bone are still not clearly described. We evaluated the different distances of temporal bone landmarks in order to assess their variations and the possible correlations between them.

September 2007

Department of Otolaryngology, the Sixth People's Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, 200233, China.

Objective: To explore the significance of the lacrimal bone at the lateral nasal wall in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.

Method: The position, dimension and thickness of the exposed lacrimal bone at the lateral nasal wall in 10 cadaveric heads(male 5, female 5) were examined and the anatomy of uncinate process, the maxillary line and M point were studied, too.

Result: The lacrimal bone at the lateral nasal wall is always situated immediately anterior to the uncinate process.
