Using data from a sample of older Korean Americans (= 2,150), we examined the prevalence and associated factors of physical, emotional, and financial mistreatment. Given the importance of contextual factors, we examined the effect of immigration-related (years in the U.S. and acculturation) and interpersonal/community-related (family solidarity, social network, and ethnic community social cohesion) factors in addition to sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. The rate of experiencing physical, emotional, and financial mistreatment during the past year was 3%, 37.9%, and 16.1%, respectively. Younger age and lower family solidarity were common risk factors for emotional and financial mistreatment. The experience of emotional mistreatment was also more likely among females and those with higher level of acculturation, smaller social networks, and lower ethnic community social cohesion. Chronic disease was an additional risk factor for financial mistreatment. The findings suggest targeted prevention and intervention strategies for elder mistreatment.

Background: Painful left bundle branch block (LBBB) syndrome is an uncommon disease that is defined as intermittent episodes of angina associated with simultaneous LBBB changes on an electrocardiogram (ECG) with the absence of flow-limiting coronary artery disease or ischemia on functional testing. Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is the most common cause of syncope and can be provoked by sublingual nitroglycerin (NTG). Herein, we report a case of painful LBBB syndrome complicated with VVS, which was misdiagnosed as acute coronary syndrome and cardiogenic shock.

The under-recruitment of historically marginalized populations into clinical trials thwarts equitable inclusion of individuals who could benefit from healthcare innovations and limits the generalizability of results. For decades, the Veterans Health Administration (VA) has conducted large clinical trials that impact clinical guidelines for veterans and civilians alike. Within the VA, women are a numeric minority, and recruitment of this population into trials is challenged by gender-specific care structures, distinct demographic characteristics, and mistreatment such as higher rates of military sexual trauma and harassment on VA grounds.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, often idiopathic, noninfectious inflammatory neutrophilic dermatitis that causes painful ulcerative cutaneous papillomatous lesions. PG often mimics surgical infection, wound dehiscence, and postoperative cellulitis, leading to high rates of misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Here, a healthy 17-year-old adolescent girl with congenital breast asymmetry, macromastia, and a history of only mild intermittent autoimmune conditions developed an open wound along her inferior left breast incision 2 weeks after reduction mammoplasty.
