Quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) are widely used in medicine, industry and agriculture as disinfectants, biocides, and fungicides. QAS have the ability to coat various surfaces, prevent adhesion of microorganisms to them and inhibit the formation of biofilm. A group of surfactants derived from benzoic acid with different chemical structures was tested: monomeric QAS with different alkyl chain lengths (C, C, C), gemini QAS containing 12-carbon alkyl chains and linkers of various lengths (3,4,6 methylene groups), as well as multifunctional QAS. Among the tested surfactants, monomeric QAS showed the highest bactericidal and fungicidal activity. All three groups of tested compounds inhibited the filamentation of C. albicans. The best antimicrobial activity was demonstrated by the monomeric surfactant CAA, while the multifunctional equivalent (2xCAA) was characterized by good anti-adhesive activity. All tested compounds are non-mutagenic and cause low hemolysis of sheep erythrocytes. Multifunctional and gemini surfactants are also non-toxic.

Quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) commonly occur as active substances in disinfectants. QAS have the important property of coating abiotic surfaces, which prevents adhesion of microorganisms, thus inhibiting biofilm formation. In this study, a group of nine monomeric QAS, differing in the structure and length of the aliphatic chain (C12, C14, C16) and the counterion (methylcarbonate, acetate, bromide), were investigated.

Monomeric and gemini surfactants as antimicrobial agents - influence on environmental and reference strains.

Quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) belong to surfactant commonly used both, in the household and in different branches of industry, primarily in the process of cleaning and disinfection. They have several positive features inter alia effectively limiting the development of microorganisms on many surfaces. In the present work, two compounds were used as biocides: hexamethylene-1,6-bis-(N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecylammonium bromide) that belongs to the gemini surfactant (GS), and its single analogue - dodecyl(trimethyl)ammonium bromide (DTAB).

Adhesion and subsequent growth of microorganisms on material surfaces are a major concern in many biomedical applications. Currently, various polymers are immobilized on material surfaces to prevent microbial colonization. However, there are several challenges with regard to the coating materials, including their inability to kill microorganisms, complexity of surface grafting, limited durability and toxicity towards humans.
