This study focused on the osmotic dehydration (OD) of ready-to-eat spinach leaves combined with the pulsed electric field (PEF) pre-treatment. Untreated and PEF-treated (0.6 kV/cm, 0-200 pulses) spinach leaves were osmotically dehydrated at room temperature for up to 120 min. The application of PEF (0.6 kV/20 pulses) prior to OD (60% glycerol, 25 °C, 60 min) lowered water activity ( = 0.891) while achieving satisfactory product acceptability (total sensory hedonic scoring of 8). During the storage of the product (at 4, 8, 12, and 20 °C for up to 30 d), a significant reduction in total microbial count evolution was observed (9.7 /g for the untreated samples vs. 5.1 /g for the PEF-OD-treated samples after 13 d of storage at 4 °C). The selection of these PEF and OD treatment conditions enabled the extension of the product shelf life by up to 33 d under chilled storage. Osmotically treated spinach could find application in ready-to-eat salad products with an extended shelf life, which is currently not possible due to the high perishability of the specific plant tissue.

Background: The gradual extrusion of water-soluble intracellular components (such as proteins) from microalgae after pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment is a well-documented phenomenon. This could be utilized in biorefinery applications with lipid extraction taking place after such an 'incubation' period, i.e.

Objective: X-ray photon-counting detectors (PCDs) have recently gained popularity due to their capabilities in energy discrimination power, noise suppression, and resolution refinement. The latest extremity photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) scanner leverages these advantages for tissue characterization, material decomposition, beam hardening correction, and metal artifact reduction. However, technical challenges such as charge splitting and pulse pileup can distort the energy spectrum and compromise image quality.

Background: Awake prone positioning (APP) can reportedly reduce the need for intubation and help improve prognosis of patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) infected with COVID-19. However, its physiological mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effect of APP on lung ventilation in patients with moderate-to-severe AHRF to better understand the effects on ventilation distribution and to prevent intubation in non-intubated patients.

Legume proteins have recently gained significant interest in the food industry for their eco-friendliness and nutritional qualities. Research shows that the replacement of specific animal protein sources with legume proteins presents sustainability and economic benefit. Nonetheless, legume proteins frequently exhibit inferior functional properties and palatability compared to animal proteins.

Beaware of Intracardiac Potentials Induced by Intravascular Lithotripsy.

Catheter Cardiovasc Interv

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, Ageo Central General Hospital, Saitama, Japan.

Background: Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL), that generates shockwaves through spark gap discharge between emitters, has been increasingly used to treat severely calcified coronary artery lesions. However, there is a question as to whether IVL has no electrical effects on endocardial tissues or cardiac implantable devices (CIEDs).

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of IVL-induced intracardiac potentials on cardiac electrophysiology and CIEDs.
