A liquid scintillation background sample was measured daily in a custom-built TDCR counter for more than 17 months. The double and triple coincidence counting rates exhibit an annual sinusoidal fluctuation with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. Possible correlations with air temperature, air humidity, radon concentration and secondary cosmic radiation were investigated. The observation of a correlation with the ambient dose equivalent rate [Formula: see text] originating from the charged component of secondary cosmic radiation and an anti-correlation with the effective atmospheric temperature T suggest that the seasonal fluctuations in the background counting rate may be primarily driven by temporal variations in the muon flux at ground level. Additionally, a correlation was found with the indoor Rn concentration in air.

Background: Current guidelines recommend empiric antibiotic therapy for patients who require hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We sought to determine whether clinical, imaging or laboratory features in patients hospitalized for CAP in whom PCR is positive for a respiratory virus enable exclusion of bacterial coinfection so that antibiotics can be withheld.
Methods: For this prospective study, we selected patients in whom an etiologic diagnosis was likely to be reached, namely those who provided a high-quality sputum sample at or shortly after admission, and in whom PCR was done to test for a respiratory virus.

Background: Heparin, an anticoagulant used in cardiac surgery, can result in heparin rebound (HR), where it returns postoperatively despite being neutralized with protamine. This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of HR in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) and evaluate the impact of HR on their short-term outcomes.
Methods: HR was defined by a 10% increase in activated coagulation time (ACT) following two hours of heparin neutralization with protamine, bleeding over 200 mL/h, and abnormal laboratory coagulation examination results.

Background: Thyroid disorders have significant clinical sequelae, including impaired growth in children, metabolic abnormalities, and impaired cognitive function. However, available studies on burden of thyroid diseases in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), particularly its prevalence and its interaction with HIV related factors (like CD4 count), are controversial. This review aimed to provide a comprehensive summary and analysis on the extent of thyroid dysfunctions in this population.

Background: Messenger RNA 3' untranslated regions (3'UTRs) control many aspects of gene expression and determine where the transcript will terminate. The polyadenylation signal (PAS) AAUAAA (AATAAA in DNA) is a key regulator of transcript termination and this hexamer, or a similar sequence, is very frequently found within 30 bp of 3'UTR ends. Short interspersed element (SINE) retrotransposons are found throughout genomes in high copy numbers.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of polydopamine (PDA) functionalization on orthodontic brackets in inhibiting biofilm formation and promoting surface bioactivity to buffer the acidity of caries-causing bacteria around orthodontic brackets and prevent demineralization. The stability of the coating in artificial saliva (AS) and distilled water was evaluated, along with its effect on pH changes in simulated body fluid (SBF) and distilled water.
Methods: Maxillary incisor orthodontic brackets underwent PDA functionalization using a dopamine hydrochloride solution following a specific protocol.
