The use of bisphenol A (BPA), a substance of very high concern, is proposed to be banned in food contact materials (FCMs) in the European Union. To prevent regrettable substitution of BPA by alternatives with similar or unknown hazardous properties, it is of importance to gain the relevant toxicological information on potential BPA alternative substances and monitor them adequately. We created an inventory of over 300 substances mentioned as potential BPA alternatives in regulatory reports and scientific literature. This study presents a prioritization strategy to identify substances that may be used as an alternative to BPA in FCMs. We prioritized 20 potential BPA alternatives of which 10 are less familiar. We subsequently reviewed the available information on the 10 prioritized less familiar substances regarding hazard profiles and migration potential obtained from scientific literature and screening tools to identify a possible risk of the substances. Major data gaps regarding the hazard profiles of the prioritized substances exist, although the scarce available data give some indications on the possible hazard for some of the substances (like bisphenol TMC, 4,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, and tetrachlorobisphenol A). In addition, very little is known about the actual use and exposure to these substances. More toxicological research and monitoring of these substances in FCMs are, therefore, required to avoid regrettable substitution of BPA in FCM.

Photon (X-ray) radiotherapy is the most common treatment used in cancer therapy. However, the exposure of normal tissues and organs at risk to ionising radiation often results in a significant incidence of low-grade adverse side effects, whilst high-grade toxicities also occur at concerningly high rates. As an alternative, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) aims to create densely ionising helium and lithium ions directly within cancer cells, thus sparing the surrounding normal cells and tissues but also leading to significantly more effective tumour control than X-rays.

Bisphenol S (BPS) has been put into production as a wide range of Bisphenol A (BPA) alternatives, while little is known regarding its cardiac developmental toxicity. To explore the effect of BPS on cardiomyocyte differentiation and its mechanism, our study established the human embryonic stem cell-cardiomyocyte differentiation model (hESC-CM), which was divided into early period of differentiation (DP1:1-8d), anaphase period of differentiation (DP2:9-16d) and whole stage of differentiation (DP3:1-16d) exposed to human-related levels of BPS. We found that the survival rate of cardiomyocytes was more sensitive to BPS at the early stage of differentiation than at the anaphase stage of differentiation, and exposure to higher than 30 µg/mL BPS throughout the differentiation period decreased the expression of cTnT.
