Circadian rhythms align biological functions with the 24-hour day-night cycle, but modern artificial light disrupts these patterns, contributing to health issues like obesity and cardiovascular disease. The circadian clock operates through a transcriptional-translational feedback loop involving core components such as BMAL1 and CLOCK. Recent research has shown circadian variations in sphingolipid metabolism, specifically sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), which plays crucial signaling roles.

Unlabelled: Adaptive immune cells are regulated by circadian rhythms (CR) under both steady state conditions and during responses to infection. Cytolytic CD8 T cells display variable responses to infection depending upon the time of day of exposure. However, the neuronal signals that entrain these cyclic behaviors remain unknown.

A Cochrane 2016 review indicated cycled light might benefit neonatal health in hospital. We systematically reviewed chronobiological factors for neonatal health in hospital units, identifying 56 relevant studies on light-dark cycles, feeding, noise, massage therapy, rooming-in, incubators vs. cribs, neonatal units vs.

The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the master mammalian circadian clock. Its cell-autonomous timing mechanism, a transcriptional/translational feedback loop (TTFL), drives daily peaks of neuronal electrical activity, which in turn control circadian behavior. Intercellular signals, mediated by neuropeptides, synchronize and amplify TTFL and electrical rhythms across the circuit.
