The present work discusses the synthesis, characterization, and environmental applications of graphene oxide (GO), melamine formaldehyde resin (MF), and melamine formaldehyde/graphene oxide composite (MGO) for the efficient removal of Pb from aqueous medium via batch and column procedures. TGA, XRD, TEM, zeta potential, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, ATR-FTIR, and other characterization techniques revealed that MGO is characterized by a greater surface area (609 m/g), total pore volume (1.0106 cm/g), pH (6.5), and the presence of various surface chemical functional groups. The synthesized solid adsorbents were used in both static and dynamic adsorption processes to remove Pb, with varying application parameters such as pH, starting concentration, adsorbent dosage, and shaking time in the case of static adsorption method. While through the column adsorption process the effects of column bed height, flow rate, and starting Pb were taken into consideration. Results of the batch adsorption demonstrated that MGO had the highest Langmuir adsorption capacity (201.5 mg/g), and the adsorption fit the nonlinear Langmuir adsorption model and Elovich kinetic models. The adsorption of Pb onto all prepared solid materials is endothermic, spontaneous, and physical in nature, as demonstrated by thermodynamic studies. Column adsorption of Pb well fitted by Thomas and Yoon Nelson nonlinear adsorption models. MGO showed a maximum column adsorption capacity of 168 mg/g when applying 4 cm, 15 mL/min, and 150 mg/L as bed height, flow rate, and initial Pb, respectively. With only a 12.6% reduction in its adsorption capacity, column regeneration showed that MGO exhibited a high degree of reusability even after five cycles of adsorption/desorption studies.

Plasmon resonance plays an important role in improving the detection of biomolecules, and it is one of the focuses of research to use metal plasmon resonance to achieve fluorescence enhancement and to improve detection sensitivity. However, the problems of nondynamic tuning and fluorescence quenching of metal plasmon resonance need to be solved. Graphene surface plasmon resonance can be dynamically controlled, and the graphene adsorption of fluorescent molecules can avoid fluorescence quenching and greatly improve the fluorescence emission intensity.

Interactions between manganese dioxides (MnO) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) have long been the subject of scientific inquiry. However, the effect of MnO crystallinity on the DOM fate remains unclear. Herein, we comprehensively investigate the adsorption, protection, and mineralization of DOM by MnO with various crystallinities (order of crystallinity: γ-30 < γ-90 < γ-120).

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occur widely in drinking water, and consumption of contaminated drinking water is an important human exposure route. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption can effectively remove PFAS from water. To support the design of GAC treatment systems, a rapid bench-scale testing procedure and scale-up approach are needed to assess the effects of GAC type, background water matrix, and empty bed contact time (EBCT) on GAC use rates.

In this study, stems and leaves of the papaya plant were employed to prepare a high-quality porous adsorbent carbonization and chemical activation using phosphoric acid. This adsorbent demonstrates superior adsorption capabilities for the efficient removal of hazardous alizarin red s (ARS) and methylene blue (MB) dyes. Thus, it contributes to waste reduction and promotes sustainable practices in environmental remediation, aligning with global efforts to develop sustainable materials that address water pollution while supporting circular economy principles.

Herein, we discuss the idea that fluorescent materials/molecules should logically show potential photoelectrochemistry (PEC) activity, and, in particular, the PEC of fluorescent small molecules (previously usually acting only as dye sensitizers for conventional semiconductors) is explored. After examining the PEC activities of some typical inorganic or organic fluorescent materials/molecules and by adopting methyl violet (MV) with the highest PEC activity among the examined fluorescent small molecules, a new and efficient (MV/Au nanoparticles (AuNPs))/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) photoanode without conventional semiconductor(s) is prepared by layer-by-layer alternating the electrodeposition of AuNPs and the adsorption of MV. A bilirubin oxidase (BOD)/CuCoO/FTO bio-photocathode is prepared by electrodeposition, calcination and cast-coating.
