Thermal damage to the skin from 8.2 and 95 GHz microwave exposures in swine.

A study of burn thresholds from superficially penetrating radio-frequency (RF) energy at 8.2 and 95 GHz for swine skin was conducted. The study determined the thresholds for superficial, partial-thickness, and full-thickness burn severities after 5 seconds of exposure at power densities of 4-30 W/cmand 2-15 W/cmat 8.2 and 95 GHz, respectively. There were significant differences in he burn thresholds at the different severities between the two frequencies due to the large difference in energy penetration depths. Biopsies were collected from each burn site at 1, 24, 72, and 168 hr post exposure. Each sample was assessed by a burn pathologist against 20 histological factors to characterize the damage resulting from these RF overexposures. A one-dimensional, layered digital phantom that utilized realistic values for dielectric and thermal properties was used to explain some observed thresholds. The results of the heating and cooling response of the animal model and histology scores of each exposure are provided to enhance future efforts at simulation of RF overexposures and to establish damage thresholds.

Methods: This retrospective study was performed in the Department of Burns, Southwest Hospital, and included 288 adult major burn patients (≥40 % TBSA) without prophylactic anticoagulant therapy. All patients received routine screening assays of coagulation indicators and Doppler ultrasound scan (DUS) during the 28 days post-burn regardless of the clinical symptoms of DVT.

Following severe burns, the predominant concern is significant fluid loss, for which balanced crystalloid solutions are widely recommended as the primary intravenous resuscitation fluids. However, current literature lacks a clear distinction among various buffered crystalloid types that might be most effective in the early resuscitation of burn patients. Evaluate the prognostic performance of the lactate-to-albumin ratio (LAR) for complications in children 5 years of age or younger with second and/or third degree burn injuries during hospitalization in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Lima, Peru. In this retrospective cohort study, we conducted prognostic tests by analyzing the medical records of children aged ≤ 5 years who suffered second- and/or third-degree burn injuries and were subsequently admitted to the ICU of a Lima-based hospital between 2017 and 2022. The LAR was calculated using lactate and albumin values measured within the first 48 h post-burn.

The Valsalva manoeuvre is widely recognised for its effectiveness in reverting supra-ventricular tachycardia (SVT) in patients with good coordination. However, this is not applicable in sedated ventilated patients and there is a dearth of literature regarding the application of Valsalva in unconscious patients on mechanical ventilation.
