Published: August 2024

Background: Current clinical approaches to regenerate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articulating cartilage defects only treat the symptoms (i.e. pain and dysfunction) and do not seek to restore joint integrity for long-term relief. Therefore, we investigated a novel self-assembling tissue-engineered cartilage to overcome this significant clinical issue for TMJ regenerative purposes.

Objectives: Examine the maturation of dynamic self-regenerating cartilage (dSRC) using auricular chondrocytes and evaluate a novel combinatorial approach with fractional laser treatment and dSRC implantation for TMJ cartilage repair.

Materials And Methods: A suspension of 10 freshly harvested rabbit ear chondrocytes was cultured under a continuous reciprocating motion to form the dSRC. After 2, 4 and 8 weeks of culture, dSRC samples were stained with H&E, Safranin-O and Toluidine Blue. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed for collagens type I and II. Channels (300-500 μm diameter and 1.2-1.5 mm depth) were created in six freshly harvested condyles using a fractional Erbium laser. Two groups were tested: dSRC in a laser-ablated lesion (experimental) and an empty laser-ablated channel (control). TMJ condyles were cultured for up to 8 weeks and analysed as described above.

Results: H&E staining showed a high cell density in dSRC compared to native cartilage. All dSRC groups demonstrated intense Safranin-O staining, indicating high glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production and intense Toluidine Blue staining showed high proteoglycan content. IHC confirmed that dSRC consisted predominantly of collagen type II. The experimental group showed improved cartilage repair at both time points compared to the empty channels.

Conclusion: dSRC viability and successful matrix formation were demonstrated in vitro. The combination of fractional laser ablation and dSRC implantation enhanced cartilage repair.

Bacterial biomineralization of heavy metals and its influencing factors for metal bioremediation.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology and Ecology (LEnME), Department of Life Science, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, 769 008, Odisha, India. Electronic address:

Increasing industrial pollution and certain hazardous agricultural practices have led to the discharge of heavy toxic metals into the environment. Among different bioremediation techniques, biomineralization is the synthesis of biomineral crystals extracellularly or intracellularly. Several bacteria, such as Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Bacillus subtilis, and Lactobacillus sphaericus have been found to induce heavy metal precipitation and mineralization for bioremediation.

Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the applicability of the D2T psoriatic arthritis (PsA) definition, adapted from rheumatoid arthritis, within a single-center observational cohort of PsA patients treated with b/tsDMARDs. In addition, we aimed to establish a numerical index defining D2T-PsA based on the ratio of observed to expected failed b/tsDMARDs and to develop a predictive model identifying features associated with the D2T condition.

Methods: The study included 267 consecutive adult PsA patients receiving b/tsDMARDs, collecting demographic, clinical, and clinimetric data.

Vehicular Internet of Things (IoT) is facilitated by efficient RF front ends with suppressed mutual coupling for enhanced spatial diversity and increased channel capacity. This paper presents a mutual coupling suppressed MIMO antenna with a hybrid decoupling technique for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications, enabling IoT in automotive systems. The single elements consist of a radiating patch with a cleaving circular slot to introduce a capacitive effect on the radiating structure.

Characterization of DsrD and its interaction with the DsrAB dissimilatory sulfite reductase.

Protein Sci

December 2024

Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Oeiras, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Microbial dissimilatory sulfate reduction is essential for sulfur and carbon cycles in oxygen-free environments, where sulfate is reduced to sulfite and further to a trisulfide form.
  • The small protein DsrD plays a significant role as an allosteric activator of the enzyme DsrAB, enhancing the efficiency of sulfite reduction.
  • The study examines DsrD's interactions with DsrAB through various analyses, highlighting a specific conserved β-loop in DsrD that is crucial for its activity-promoting function.

Extracting regularities and probabilities from the environment is a fundamental and critical ability in an ever-changing surrounding. Previous findings showed that people are highly efficient in learning these regularities and that emotional stimuli are better learned than neutral ones. Yet, the generality and the underlying mechanism of this benefit are poorly understood.
