is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite of the phylum Alveolata (subphylum Apicomplexa) which has not been studied extensively in a biochemical context. is a primary cause of reproductive disorders causing mummification and abortion not only in cattle but also in other small ruminant species resulting in a substantial economic impact on the livestock industry. In canids, which are the final hosts of , clinical disease includes neuromuscular symptoms, ataxia, and ascending paralysis. Fatal outcomes of neosporosis have also been reported depending on the host species, age and immune status, however, its zoonotic potential is still uncertain. Therefore, should be thoroughly investigated. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) and MS imaging (MSI) were used, combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to investigate these intracellular parasites. The aim of this study was to identify molecular biomarkers for tachyzoite-infected host cells and to further clarify their functions. By atmospheric-pressure scanning microprobe MALDI MS(I), sections of -infected and non-infected host cell pellets were examined in order to determine potential markers. In vivo, infects different types of nucleated cells, such as endothelial cells which represent a highly immunoreactive cell type. Therefore, primary bovine umbilical vein endothelial cells were here used as a suitable infection system. For comparison, the permanent MARC-145 cell line was used as an additional, simplified in vitro cell culture model. HPLC-tandem MS (HPLC-MS/MS) experiments combined with database search were employed for structural verification of markers. The statistically relevant biomarkers found by MS and identified by HPLC-MS/MS measurements were partly also found in infected monolayers. Marker signals were imaged in cell layers of -infected and non-infected host cells at 5 µm lateral resolution.

This study investigated the effects of nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NAPP) application and dentin rehydration with water (REHY) on bond strength (BS) of adhesives. Three etch-and-rinse adhesives were tested: Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SBM / water-based primer + adhesive resin), Gluma Bond Universal (GBU / single-bottle containing acetone as organic solvent) and Prime&Bond Universal (PBU / single-bottle containing propanol as organic solvent). Adhesives were applied: 1- to phosphoric acid-etched dentin (Control), 2- after NAPP application for 45 seconds to etched dentin or 3- after REHY with water (10 seconds) of plasma-treated etched dentin.

Thin and Flexible PANI/PMMA/CNF Forest Films Produced via a Two-Step Floating Catalyst Chemical Vapor Deposition.

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Research Lab of Advanced, Composite, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology (R-NanoLab), School of Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, 9 Heroon Polytechniou Str., Zographos, 15780 Athens, Greece.

In this paper, we explore a straightforward two-step method to produce high-purity, vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanofibres (MWCNFs) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Two distinct solutions are utilized for this CVD method: a catalytic solution consisting of ferrocene and acetonitrile (ACN) and a carbon source solution with camphor and ACN. The vapors of the catalytic solution inserted in the reaction chamber through external boiling result in a floating catalyst CVD approach that produces vertically aligned CNFs in a consistent manner.

The discharge of industrial wastewater with dyes into natural tributaries has serious environmental consequences on aquatic ecosystems and the health of living beings. Atmospheric plasmas have proven to be very useful for the degradation of organic contaminants in water; in this context, corona type discharge, owing to its physical characteristics, is capable of degrading and even mineralizing dyes dissolved in water. In this work, zeolite was used as a catalyst in the degradation of the textile azo dye Direct Orange 39 (DO39) through interaction with plasma generated at atmospheric pressure.

Electronic address:

The introduction of ultrasonic energy into microwave vacuum drying (MVD) enhances drying efficiency and product quality. To investigate the effect of ultrasonically coupled microwave vacuum (USMVD) drying on the flavor release of shiitake mushrooms, differences in the pore structure of dried mushrooms were analyzed in relation to the flavor of mushroom soup. The results showed that ultrasound mainly changed the pore structure of shiitake mushrooms in the range of 5000-50,000 nm, and the total pore volume of shiitake mushrooms was the largest when the ultrasound amplitude was 70 %.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a promising analytical method to visualize the distribution of lipids in biological tissues. To clarify the relationship between cellular distribution and lipid types in a tissue, it is crucial to achieve both an improvement in ion detection sensitivity and a reduction in the ionization area. We report methods for improving the efficiency of ion transfer to a mass spectrometer and miniaturizing the extraction area of a sample for tapping-mode scanning probe electrospray ionization (t-SPESI), atmospheric pressure sampling, and ionization methods.
