The discovery of unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) provides the opportunity to control the common but much desired property of thermal expansion, which is valuable not only in scientific interests but also in practical applications. However, most of the available NTE materials are limited to a narrow temperature range, and the NTE effect is generally weakened by various modifications. Here, we report an enhanced NTE effect that occurs over a wide temperature range , and this NTE effect is accompanied by an abnormal enhanced tetragonality, a large spontaneous polarization, and a G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in the present perovskite-type ferroelectric of (1-)PbTiO-BiCoO. Specifically, for the composition of 0.5PbTiO-0.5BiCoO, an extensive volumetric contraction of ~4.8 % has been observed near the Curie temperature of 700 °C, which represents the highest level in PbTiO-based ferroelectrics. According to our experimental and theoretical results, the large NTE originates from a synergistic effect of the ferroelectrostriction and spin crossover of cobalt on the crystal lattice. The actual NTE mechanism is contrasted with previous functional NTE materials, in which the NTE is simply coupled with one ordering such as electronic, magnetic, or ferroelectric ordering. The present study sheds light on the understanding of NTE mechanisms, and it attests that NTE could be simultaneously coupled with different orderings, which will pave a new way toward the design of large NTE materials.

Shale barriers negatively impact thermal recovery processes of oil sand or ultraheavy oil, particularly during the rising stage of SAGD, by affecting oil flow, steam chamber evolution, and heat distribution. Existing mathematical models for the rising stage of SAGD often overlook the influence of shale barriers on the evolution of the steam chamber and heat distribution. This study includes experiments to investigate the impact of a single shale barrier above the production well during the rising stage of the SAGD.

For the purpose of efficient temporary plugging and self-removal of the plugging of reservoir formations, the thermally induced expandable and acid-generating temporary plugging agent (TAPA) was prepared with acrylonitrile (AN), methacrylic acid (MAA), ,-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), and butyl acrylate (BA) as the shell monomers as well as the carboxylate esters with high boiling points as the core material. The TAPA was structurally characterized, and the properties were studied. The results showed that the TAPA had a good spherical structure with a median particle size (D50) of 16.

High-entropy ceramics hold promise for application as thermal barrier coating materials. However, a key challenge in practical applications lies in the low fracture toughness compared to that of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Herein, we designed (Hf,Zr,Ce,)O-AlO (M = Y, Ca, and Gd) ceramic composites by following a set of fundamental guidelines.

Context: "Nanostructure of graphene-reinforced with polymethyl methacrylate" (PMMA-G), and vice versa, is investigated using its molecular structure, in the present work. The PMMA-G nanostructure was constructed by bonding PMMA with graphene nanosheet in a sense to get three different configurations. Each configuration consisted of polymeric structures with three degrees of polymerization (such as monomers, dimers, and trimers polymers, respectively).
