The importance of male underwear in cases of alleged sexual assault.

The potential evidential value of male underwear in cases of alleged sexual assault is often overlooked. Male underwear can be a critical item in the investigation of alleged sexual assaults. Body fluids/DNA, which may transfer to the penis during sexual contact, may in turn transfer to the inside front of the underwear, and persist for months or years, provided the underwear are not washed. Here, we demonstrate how the case circumstances drive the sampling strategy of male underwear, in order to maximize the effectiveness of the forensic analysis. Sampling considerations including recovery methods and sampling sequence are discussed, and a methodical examination strategy of male underwear is proposed. To highlight the pertinence of male underwear to the investigation of alleged sexual assaults, three real-life cases are discussed, in which male underwear were examined for multiple body fluids/DNA, and the findings obtained proved evidentially significant. The different cases demonstrate the versatility of male underwear examination in situations, where different body fluids and DNA may transfer based on the specific allegation, and emphasize how targeted sampling can allow the scientist to assess the probability of the findings based on two competing propositions. Accurate sampling strategies are imperative for robust probability assignment in evaluative reporting of scientific findings.

Vaginal drainage of semen in underwear: A forensic study.

SPA Forensic Services, Scottish Crime Campus, Craignethan Drive, Gartcosh, Glasgow G69 8AE, UK.

The UK and Ireland Association of Forensic Science Providers' (AFSP) Body Fluid Forum (BFF) conducted this research to investigate the occurrence of seminal fluid draining from the vagina onto underwear worn after penile-vaginal sexual intercourse with internal ejaculation. This study shows the differing effects of the female being either supine or upright and active on possible patterns of seminal staining on underwear, and the effect of time since intercourse on the deposition of seminal fluid on underwear in a limited study. Here, we demonstrate that post vaginal intercourse different distributions of semen staining can be observed on underwear.

Article Synopsis
  • Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a common technique used to estimate body composition, but factors like bladder filling can impact its accuracy.
  • A study with sedentary young adults examined how bladder filling influences measurements of total body water, fat mass, fat-free mass, and basal metabolic rate after participants voided their bladders.
  • Results indicated that while voiding does not affect measured impedance, it significantly alters derived BIA values; moreover, there was poor consistency between single-frequency and multi-frequency BIA devices, suggesting they should not be used interchangeably.

The transfer of spermatozoa onto children's underwear during normal domestic laundering activities.

In cases of sexual assaults involving children, biological evidence such as semen is often found on clothes rather than on intimate swabs. Two cases involving young girls were submitted to one of the AFSP BFF forensic science laboratories instigating further research into the background levels of semen on children's underwear after being laundered, without sexual acts occurring. This study considered the potential for background levels of semen in the washing machine and the levels of semen transferred with varying laundry storage and washing arrangements.

The sensitivity of DNA analysis has progressed to the point that trace levels of DNA, originating from only a few cells, can generate informative profiles. This means that virtually any item or surface can be sampled with a reasonable chance of obtaining a DNA profile. As the presence of DNA does not suggest how it was deposited, questions are often raised as to how the DNA came to be at a particular location and the activity that led to its deposition.
