Aims: Influenza remains a contributor to substantial global morbidity and mortality. There is very limited data on disease burden in Egypt. The purpose of this study was to estimate the incidence of influenza-associated Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in three districts in Gharbia governorate in 2018.
Methods: This study Followed the World Health Organization (WHO) manual for estimating disease burden associated with seasonal influenza. The hospital admission database was screened for SARI patients in three districts at Gharbia governorate in 2018. A hospital admission survey (HAS) was used to define the catchment population. The incidence rate estimation was computed as the number of influenza-positive SARI cases per 100,000 population.
Results: A total of 180 SARI cases were identified in the catchment area. The median age was 23 years [IQR: 2-53], and 45% were males. Out of the total SARI cases, 33.3% influenza was confirmed by the laboratory test of RP-PCR. Influenza A(H3N2) virus predominated representing 55.0% of patients, thanA(H1N1) 26.7% and Flu-B virus 18.3%. Influenza prevailed in winter and spring; no deaths from influenza were reported. The annual incidence of influenza-associated SARIs found higher in <2 years (282 /100,000) and ≥65 years patients (215/100,000) at significant level p<0.001.
Conclusion: The WHO Manual for estimating disease burden associated with seasonal influenza was successfully operationalized in the three districts of Gharbia governorate. It can be used in other districts. A considerable burden was associated with influenza viruses requiring hospitalization, especially among the older adult group.

This study aimed to identify imaging risk factors for spinal cord injury without radiologic abnormalities (SCIWORA) in children. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of children with SCIWORA admitted to our hospital between January 1, 2012, and September 30, 2022. Univariate and binary logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of various factors including MRI type, maximum cross-sectional area of spinal cord injury, injury length, injury signal intensity ratio.

The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of vancomycin change during HD, increasing the risk of subtherapeutic concentrations. The aim of this study was to evaluate during and after the conventional and prolonged hemodialysis sessions to identify the possible risk of the patient remaining without adequate antimicrobial coverage during therapy. Randomized, non-blind clinical trial, including critically ill adults with septic AKI on conventional (4 h) and prolonged HD (6 and 10 h) and using vancomycin for at least 72 h.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a widely used surgery for portal hypertensive patients, whose potential postoperative complications are closely related to the hemodynamic condition of the portal venous system. The selection of shunt position in the surgery may affect the postoperative hemodynamics; however, it is difficult for clinical studies to investigate the influence. Therefore, this study aims to employ the computational model simulating TIPS to compare the hemodynamic differences resulting from different shunt positions, and also to investigate the influences of different geometrical model simplification strategies used in the TIPS simulation.

Mechanical ventilation contributes to diaphragm atrophy and muscle weakness, which is referred to as ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD). The pathogenesis of VIDD has not been fully understood until recently. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 24 h of mechanical ventilation on fibro-adipogenic progenitor (FAP) proliferation, endothelial-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), and immune cell infiltration driving diaphragm fibrosis in a rabbit model.

Rationale And Objectives: To develop and validate a radiomics signature, utilizing baseline and restaging CT, for preoperatively predicting progression-free survival (PFS) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC).
Methods: A total of 316 patients with LAGC who received NAC followed by gastrectomy were retrospectively included in this single-center study; these patients were split into two cohorts, one for training (n = 243) and the other for validation (n = 73), based on the different districts of our hospital. A total of 1316 radiomics features were extracted from the volume of interest of the gastric-cancer lesion on venous phase CT images.
