Exploration of multifunctional integrated catalysts is of great significance for photocatalysis toward practical application. Herein, a 1D confined nanoreactor with a heterogeneous core-shell structure is designed for synergies of efficient catalysis and temperature monitoring by custom encapsulation of Z-scheme heterojunction CuS quantum dots/BiVO (CuS QDs/BiVO) and YOS-Er, Yb. The dispersed active sites created by the QDs with high surface energy improve the mass transfer efficiency, and the efficient electron transport channels at the heterogeneous interface extend the carrier lifetime, which endows the nanoreactor with excellent catalytic performance. Meanwhile, real-time temperature monitoring is realized based on the thermally coupled levels H/S→I of Er using fluorescence intensity ratio, which enables the monitorable photocatalysis. Furthermore, the nanoreactor with a multidimensional structure increases effective intermolecular collisions to facilitate the catalytic process by restricting the reaction within distinct enclosed spaces and circumvents potential unknown interaction effects. The design of multi-space nanoconfined reactors opens up a new avenue to modulate catalyst function, providing a unique perspective for photocatalytic applications in the mineralization of organic pollutants, hydrogen production, and nitrogen fixation.

Environmental concerns are driving the development of eco-friendly and effective methods for contaminant monitoring and remediation. In this study, a lanthanide porphyrin-based MOF with dual fluorescence sensing and photocatalytic properties was synthesized and applied for the detection and combined removal of Cr(VI) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). Using different excitation wavelengths, the material exhibited selective detection of Cr(VI) via fluorescence quenching and CIP through fluorescence enhancement.

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is an extensively used broad-spectrum, fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for treating diverse bacterial infections. Effluent treatment plants (ETPs) worldwide lack technologies to detect or remediate antibiotics. CIP reaches the aquatic phase primarily due to inappropriate disposal practices, lack of point-of-use sensing, and preloaded activated charcoal filter at ETPs.

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) is a widely used water purifier and is easily affected by external factors. Given that the actual water environment conditions are complicated, this study designed an oxygen-doped carbon nitride (CNO) with rich electron sites to explore whether direct electron transfer promotes the degradation efficiency of Fe(VI) for pollutants under visible light. For comparison, we also prepared phosphorus-doped carbon nitride (CNP), which has electron-deficient sites and indirect electron transfer.

Although Pb-based metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have excellent photoelectric characteristics, their toxicity remains a limiting factor for their widespread application. In the paper, a series of CsCuClxBr3-x (x = 1, 2, 3) MHP microcrystals were developed and their hydrogen evolution performance in ethanol and HX (X = Cl, Br) was also studied. Among them, CsCuCl3 microcrystals exhibit high hydrogen evolution performance in both HX and ethanol, attributed to their longest average lifetime and suitable band structure.

Limitations in solar energy conversion by photocatalysis typically stem from poor underlying charge carrier properties. Transient Absorption (TA) reveals insights on key photocatalytic properties such as charge carrier lifetimes and trapping. However, on the microsecond timescale, these measurements use relatively large probe sizes ranging in millimetres to centimetres which averages the effect of spatial heterogeneity at smaller length scales.
